The goal is to help us all gain a better understanding of the ham community... what we like... what we don't like... about various aspects of our hobby. Let's make it fun and maybe kick up a little dust once in a while. I hope you all will participate and enjoy the questions.

Please enter your ideas for future survey questions yourself (click on the "Enter your idea" link just above) or send them directly to me at surveymaster@eham.net .

I often get comments that there is a commercial interest in the survey questions and that some of the questions are "rigged"...I assure all eham users that the questions are
in no way influenced by any company, person or persons.
The questions in the survey all come via contributions to eham or are just plain made-up by your humble survey manager.

Dayton 2007
Been hamming for 19 years. This was my first Dayton visit and I was blown away. Some local hams and I planned a year early. It was great. Don't blame the fuel prices for '08. Car Pool! I will definitely be going back next year!

I could not go to the Dayton Hamfeast. So did Kenwood offer a new HF rig as rumored? Or are we still stuck with that god awful ugly TS-2000.?

Dayton epilog....
Got home a little weary last night after an 8 hour drive back east. Had a great time at the 2007 Hamvention and I thought I note a few observations:

1) Tailgating is the only way to go. Having the truck in the flea market is invaluable. Split the space with a few friends, and you have a base to go back to to unload, refuel, even take an afternoon catnap while selling a few items out of the back.

2) Once again, the weather was spectacular. Cool, breezy, and sunny skies for the most part, and no rain.

3) Disappointed to see so many tailgaters leaving by noon on Saturday. By 1700, there were only 50% remaining and Sunday was worse by Hamvention standards.

4) Although I didn't use them, it appeared that there were plenty of shuttle buses.

5) The new offerings from Icom, Yaesu, Tokyo High Power, and Hilberling are fantastic. Can't wait to see the Bluetooth interface on the Yaesu FTM-10 mobile rig.

6) If you persist, you might be able to bring home with you some gear that might not be FCC approved for sale yet. I won't say anything more except to say there's only two units in the US at the moment..... call them "field test units".

7) With all of the press and TV coverage there, I wish we all could put on some decent slacks, maybe a golf shirt, and look professional and presentable for 2 days. We need all the good press we can get.

So with 2007 in the can, I'm going to open the goodies I got there and mark the calendar off for next year. Hope you all had as good of a time.

Back home again from Dayton
Well, my 51'st year has come and gone. Really had a GREAT time seeing lots of fellow hams I have talked with and met over the years. Even had several 807's with them.... Lots of GREAT new equipment. Really enjoyed the flea market again. Little smaller than last year but still lots of good junk.... Have already signed up the rooms for my VE4 friends and myself for next year. Geat show.. 73's Chuck K8BBE

I went, I saw, I tired!!!
I have been going since I was 16, now 43. Been frozen, dehydrated, sun burnt, had sun poisioning, rained on, snowed on,and muddy half way up my legs. Flea market down since its hayday, but still worth the trip. Many things you just can't find anywhere else esp. small parts for that boatanchor you are restoring. I was one of the youngest people there. The older hams are passing away and there are not enough that find the magic in radio that we did. I will go again and again until I join the others as a SK.

CQ Corn-test, CQ Corn-test....

Not a Corn-tester....

Can you believe there are actually a couple of contests going on this Dayton Hamfest weekend?

Next it will be Christmas Day! (Or is there already a contest scheduled for Christmas Day?)

I think we should have a contest to see how many contests we can work in a weekend!

Dayton 2007
I have been to Dayton many times, seldom missing a year in the 80's and 90's, but not in the last 3 or 4 years. What with $3.50/gallon gas, $100 plus per nite motel rooms, etc there is little incentive anymore now that is is so easy to find what I need on the Internet.

5th trip
This year is my 5th trip back to Dayton, I guess I'm pretty well addicted at this point.
I go every couple of years, since I don't have enough vacation time to do it every year. For the first time I'm flying up, so this will limit the goodies I can bring back (maybe that is a good thing). My primary interest is the newest gear (mostly the newest from ICOM).
To whom-ever goes this year, I hope to see you.

A word to the wise! We left our van full of equipment in the Flea market overnight, and someone siphoned half the gas out of our tank! At $3.50 a gallon here, we are getting a locking gascap this year! Security at nite is a joke!

Dayton AKA "Mecca"
I have not yet made the trek to the Holy Land of Ham-dom. I really wanted to make it this year but the calendar snuck (sneaked?) up on me. Alas, too late. Perhaps a Dayton Account-able-a-buddy is needed to keep one another on track and not let deadlines pass. Also, an Elmer or QSO contact, local or even DX, can make it happen. Going alone is like sending yourself a QSL card. The Dayton "machine" should take on this task to keep the numbers up. Also, scattered feeder-fests by the Dayton conglomerate throughout the year can also ratchet up anticipation and participation. Again, I am not a veteran but would like to "do it" before I tap out my last CQ. The "Haj" is not required but all accounts are almost always positive. The professional gripers are alive, but even those who are unsettled about it, still remark that a "Good time was had by all."

Been there for 7 years running.. it's not so much the place, or the new gear, as the experience. You'll never feel so much a ham as at Dayton... I'm rejuvinated every year. Of course few of us can afford the parade of new stuff, but there's something there for everyone, and if you're a people watcher, if you sit still long enough, one of almost everything passes by... and for better or worse, they're all us... come down and see what it's all about.. you'll never be the same! de KK8ZZ

On the Road
From Southern California it's 2200 miles each way driving. While my schedule will not permit me to attend this year, I know of two carloads of hams from this area that will carpool roundtrip and operate mobile enroute. Splitting the fuel and motel rooms cuts down the cost.

Dayton 2007
I wanted to go but I never know soon enough to get a room. I own my own business and I have to work every weekend. My Wife keeps telling me to go but I know I would just pay for a room and at the end I would not be able to go for some resaon and still have to pay for the room.

I used to go there every year after I was licensed in the 80's and all I can say is if You have never went, GO AT LEAST ONCE. I would like to attend for some of the forums, I did not take the time to go to any of them and I wish I would have.

I wonder if the forums could be recorded for the people that have not attended and posted on the web? I would be willing to pay a fee to watch some of them on operating HF & Antennas.

I must admit I do check eBay almost every day in the Ham Radio section so for me its not so much for the stuff to buy but what I could learn.

I wonder if there could be some kind of contest lile a lottery to raise money and use the money to have one Ham a year will a all expence paid trip to Dayton, like for the people in Alaska or other places that are a long long way from Dayton.

Dayton or Bust
YES !!!! I will be going to Dayton again for the 51 time.

Well, it started back in 1956, when I got my FIRST license, KN8BBE. I took the test
in February, of that year, and was promised, by my Father, W8KYK, that I would
go to the BIG radio show in Dayton, The DAYTON HAMVENTION. The year
before, I wanted to go so bad, I played hooky from school, and hid in the trunk of
the car, hoping to go. My luck was going good till Dad picked up George Lightfoot,
W8KH, and opened the trunk. Lots of swearing went on, and the 10 mile trip
back home, shot me down for that year. I did get a letter, from my Dad, telling me
to get the license, and I would go next year. I worked hard and passed the test and
went the following year.

Dayton
(correction - one way)
I wish!
Gas is $3/gal. Google maps estimates 320 miles. 320mi/25mpg=~13 gals. So I would be $40 (oneway) just for gas assuming that nothing gets in the way and reduces my truck mpg (traffic jams, etc.), and that nothing breaks along the way.

Add food, tolls, etc.

Nope, I don't have two nickels to rub together.

Hopefully the hamvention will continue until someday I can afford to go.

Posted by KA2DDX on May 11, 2007

Just to far.
Way to far for a working west coaster to go. Love the way all the 8 landers make it sound so easy to drive to, but the reality of Dayton is that as long as THE convention for Ham radio is many thousands of miles away and, no offence meant, in DAYTON most of the Hams I know and myself will never get to go.
If it has to be far away for a good portion of the Ham community how about a different place now and then and make it somewhere someone WANTS to go, like Chicago or Indy or (my dream) Las vegas.

Yep been there.
I have been to Dayton 4 times in the last 25 years of my ham life. Yes I will go again. It was a nice fun drive in a convoy with other hams from Missouri. But now I live in AZ and it is a bit farther!!! But I will not let that stop me. I cant beleive someone that only lives 12 hours away would not go at least once. And some folks just dont want to leave their diveways!! But thats OK as that leaves more stuff for us hearty souls that are brave enough to risk the crowds in the flea market and the smoke of the burning brats !!!
See you there in the next year or so. And no gas is NOT a factor to me. It is what it is. If thats what causes you to NOT enjoy something then your priorities in life are a bit skewed!

Been three times. To really enjoy it you have to be prepared to stay three days and spend, spend and spend some more. Unfortunately I've NEVER had that kind of money to throw around. And have only done one day trips there. I'm sure if you have the money, it's a wonderful time. Visiting Paris France is also. But it takes MONEY! The hams that get all the publicity are the money guys...but MOST hams have very little extra cash. Don't believe it? Just look at attendence over the last 15 years. As the costs go up, the crowd goes down. Georgetown Delaware is the best hamfest left anymore. Admission is FREE!

I respectfully beg to differ. "down in the noise"??? :-)

From mapquest, the distance would be as follows:

Total Est. Time: 67 hours, 35 minutes
Total Est. Distance: 3898.43 miles

That's about 3 days of driving each way ... and the gas in the remote stretches of Canada is probably at $6.00 / gal [US Dollars]

Well, I would like to go, but the commute from Alaska is a little to far ... although it is a nice drive.

I started attending only 3 years ago (been licensed 50 years!), but it's a wonderful event. The flea market itself is almost worth it. You can find just about anything you might want for a construction project - and tons of schlock you never knew existed. For me, it was an eye-opener to see what "hams" look like in large numbers - strange, but eerily compelling...

Then there are the new shiny products, the vendor reps, some great forums and dinners.

gas $$$$$$$
Sounds like fun, but gas is ruling my pocket book.
Maybe next year?

Getting expensive
I enjoy the show, but... It's a 4 hour drive for me. With ticket prices, and the rip off gas prices, I just can't justify going anymore.

I've only gone once and that was enough-all good hams should make the pilrimage once in their lives in order to enter ham heaven.

Like to go, always fun, but falls on 20th wedding aniversary, and don't care for the potential broken bones given to me via the xyl!

This year will be my 28th trip. Look for my Kit Building Forum at 1145 on Friday in Room 5. Also after Hamvention, look for this year's slide shows at www.youtube.com/k0neb

Never attended
The interest I once had in hamfests is gone. Unlikely I will attend any ever again.

too far....
As it is not next door... Sorry, but I'll pass. Was there back in the nineties but Friedrichshafen in Europe is catching up fast and Europe is more interesting than the US in general anyway.

Wow! Out of the last 27 years, I've only missed once. I wouldn't think of not going!

Going to sit this one out and let the chickenbanders have it. Bass fishing and goldwinging are the agenda.

For what it costs me to attend, I can buy a new rig, so I'll pass. I've been 3 times since 1991.

Dayton 2007
I've been to Dayton 13 times now and wish I could go this year but can't. I have already started plans for attending in 2008. I wish the Hamvention lasted more than 2.5 days, you just can't see all of the flea market and the inside vendors in that time. I'd like to see it run a full Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and then keep the Sunday part as it is today.
