HamRadio 2009 -- Friedrichshafen 2009
Created by on 2009-06-30I participated in the HamRadio 2009 event held since yesterday at the Friedrichshafen fairgrounds.
Many, many people walked through the doors (according to some exhibitors, more than last year) although the organizers did not want to provide me with advance attendance information. This information will be made available a few days after the event and will be published in twitter at http://twitter.com/FL360.
Since pictures are worth a thousand words, I will just add captions to the photos.

The second flea market also seeing many, many people. Some exhibitors said the year seems better than last year. Tomorrow's number will tell the truth.

| I found the show was awesome this year, good exibition, nice fley-market, excellent talks and presentations. I found HAM-Radio is stepping up towards Dayton, probably already better on presentations ... but I still feel Dayton has more exibitors (professional and on flea-market). But camping went worse over the past years. Previously I used to enjoy the camping nearby the exibition halls. But service and space dropped significantly, so that I decided to go for a Hotel for the first time in the past 20+ years! | ||

| Peter, Thanks for the view of HamRadio. From 2001 until 2004 I worked 1,5 KM from the Messe (in the ZF Buildings) and lived about 5 KM on the other side. Moved there from Cincinnati so was great to go from Dayton 1 year to HamRadio the next. Have also been to Dayton. HamRadio is truly international, not just European, and shows the best of Amateur Radio technology AND culture. 73, Robert ex-DL4GRC | ||

| I can echo Tanaka-san's sentiments, although I had much more comfortable accommodations! The restaurant at the Expo was excellent, the coffee was first-class and I never had any trouble accessing the ATM. For me, one of the more exciting items was that the Swiss ADAT ADT-200 direct-sampling SDR transceiver is now in small-series production. http://www.adat.ch/index_e.html I also saw the Hilberling announcement. Time will tell...in this era of SDR and IF-level DSP, one has to wonder how well a classical analogue design will fare, especially at that price level. We spent ten hours driving back through appalling weather. 3) The food was good, the beer was good and the staff running the exhibition center know what they are doing. Even on the Saturday it took only five minutes to get through the turnstiles. 4) Lots of bargains in the fleamarket and if you want good value be prepared to haggle in basic German or basic Italian. 5) No sleep. Most of the camp went to bed way WAY past midnight and if the farm cockerel didn't wake you up at dawn then the jets taking off at 0600 will. 6) Friendly people. We shared beer, food and stories and the camp was a real United Nations. I went round the camp on Saturday evening counting flags and car stickers and found 22 countries represented. 7) If you come bring Euro notes and coins. There is one ATM and one small bank and they seemed overwhelmed. 8) A handful of pretty girls including a spectacular blonde in a black & white outfit on one of the stands in Hall A on the Sunday. Finally............... 9) The Hilberling PT-8000 is alive!! The project has been taken over by Telefunken and they promise to release the rig to the public by the end of the year. Tanakasan | ||

As the author writes, the number of visitor acts like the sunspots: stable or increasing. This year was a real good version. We only missed one major reseller compared to last year....classic international. With the strong EUR/weak pound I tought to make some good deals with UK reseller KENT but german reseller WIMO had much better deals. ex. CG-3000 ext. tuner : 230 EUR MFJ 259 : 259 EUR Ameritron 5 port remote switch : 160 EUR @ flea market a lot of russian/eastern europe surplus stuff. I picked up some vacuum condensator for very good prices. What's mekka for the moslim, is Friederichshafen for the ham. | Been to Friedrichshafen a few times and this year was pretty full. Great Article.....Friedrichshafen is more "ham friendly" than Dayton. Dayton is a "back-breaker"....only the round hall to sit down. Friedrichshafen is far more organized and the flea market is inside. 73 ed | ||

| Thanks for the vitual tour of a big ham event I most likely will never be able to attend. The photographs were just like being there. I have the Yeasu FT7800R dual bander in my truck now. Great little rig and I love the instant push buttons to change frequently used channels. It keeps my mind on the road instead of the VFO! | ||

| The monster tower on the show was Japanese, not Chinese. But what really surprised me: they sold 4 of those during the show!! At Eur 40,000 a piece! Crisis!? Where? I have visited Ham Radio for almost every year since it started in Konstanz. It is great for spotting trends. Here are a couple: 1. The number of high power linears sold are on the increase. Preferebly automatically tuned. 160m-6m 2. Computer hardware were less visible on this year's show. (with the exception of a laptop seller) They are becoming an integral part of Ham Radio, which showed in the number of applications offered. 3. SDR, SDR! Exiting trend, probably leaving "classical" Ham Radio sellers in the dust. But see 2. it is a computer application. 4. Digi modes. Yes another computer application. But not for the majority of the hams. There was a lot, but not in the limelight. What surprised me was the number of TNC's on offer. New. 5. D-Star does not twinkle. Why? Wrong marketing concept? | 16th time in a row i went to Friedrichshafen. Although the fair is not what it used to be. The commercial hall gets smaller and smaller over the years... But we'll be back next year I guess. Oh, the 44 meter tower was from Japan, not from China. | ||

| Hey, I thought that place looked familiar. I was there back in June 2002, only that arena was selling antiques. Really wish I was there for the radio stuff. Beautiful area, Friedrichshafen, on the shores of Bodensee (Lake Konstance) with the Swiss Alps across the lake. I remember that day in Friedricshafen very well. Started out that day in Frankfurt then drove to Lindau then to Friedrichshafen along the shore of Lake Konstance up to Stuttgart to visit family. Then left that night at 11:30PM and drove back to Frankfurt! I was never so tired in my life! | ||

| Good remark Tom! I visited Dayton in 2005 and was constantly avoiding being ran over by those well fed HAM's on those Electrical trikes. It was stunning to see that they were even eating pop corn while driving and watching the radio's. I was in Friedrichshafen last week as well and we had great fun as usual. I dont know if Dayton is bigger but I found that there was not much of a HAM atmosphere outside the show. Maybe we didn't look at the right place.In FDN the fun goes on every evening downtown. | Nice pictures. All the test gear reminded me of the "classic" hamfests in the DC metro area we went to in my youth. At the time there was a lot of government surplus gear available, usually sold by the pallet, and much of it ended up in Gathersburg or Fredrick. | ||

BTW, I bought mine some years ago from a guy selling them from W9 land. He used clicks on each section, that made it easy to setup and fall-proof. The main issue with Friedrichshafen is that you must haggle when buying things. If you can't haggle, you lose. Everyone starts high and then lowers. The best day to buy is Sunday morning, when people are willing to get rid of stuff for less so they dont haul it back. Of course you only find stuff others don't want. There were some very expensive items such as a KWM-2 for E1200 ($1600) from a German guy, and a Westinghouse receiver for E1500 ($2000) from an Italian which is too much for me. There were plenty of vintage radios from the 40s and 50s for E40 ($60) and up. One Dutch guy showed an old, 190X receiving apparatus replica he built using mahogany wood, that used a moving metal belt creating a magnetic field inside magnets, which then converted IF into sound. Very, very interesting. U&nfortunately I didn't get his web address, but maybe there is someone with this info. It was in hall B1 or B2. Excellent show but compared to US shows, expensive. In Europe there is VAT (Value Added Tax) on new products - 19% in Germany - which of course is not charged on second hand products. | I have lots more on aviation and one day I will uploade them. But that is an additional 1GB of data! Actually, although I speak languages (English, Italian, Greek, French, German) I enjoy listening in English so listening to planes in multilingual Europe is great. When I hear a plane, I try to imagine where it is located in my mind based on its flight number (dictates general direction), its pilot voiced heading, or its waypoint, and so on. Kind of like a spatial quiz. I used to be a pilot but gave it up when my instuctor kept drinking a beer after every training flight (in Belgium in the early 80s) and my flight was the last one for the day. Am glad you enjoyed the website. Check out the videos (the landing videos are interesting including a hard landing on a Q400). The Mount Gabriel site in South West Ireland is another greeat place to monitor. If you cant sleep and wake up one night at 3am, the frequencies come alive with more than 800 jets arriving from North America daily! 135.6, 132.225, 132.15 etc etc. When Concorde was operating (which I saw on the Mount Gabriel engineering radar screen), London west 132.85 was rebroadcast here so that Concorde could glide straight from the west of Ireland to London. | I attended this hamfest in 1983. It was already the largest hamfest in the world. Dayton was never as good as Friedrichshafen. I was a "Ham" in Germany for two years. My Call was DA2SN. Looks like a great outing. Back in the 70's, there were some ham auctions in the Boston area - most notably the one at Honeywell - Billerica, MA (USA), but this one looks even better. Back in the 70's, there were some ham auctions in the Boston area - most notably the one at Honeywell - Billerica, MA (USA), but this one looks even better. | Yes, the collapsible towers are push ups. BTW, I bought mine some years ago from a guy selling them from W9 land. He used clicks on each section, that made it easy to setup and fall-proof. I also bought a base that you park on and then you plug ther tower on it. See http://vekinis.com/AmateurRadioImages.html for samples. The main issue with Friedrichshafen is that you must haggle when buying things. If you can't haggle, you lose. Everyone starts high and then lowers. The best day to buy is Sunday morning, when people are willing to get rid of stuff for less so they dont haul it back. Of course you only find stuff others don't want. There were some very expensive items such as a KWM-2 for E1200 ($1600) from a German guy, and a Westinghouse receiver for E1500 ($2000) from an Italian which is too much for me. There were plenty of vintage radios from the 40s and 50s for E40 ($60) and up. One Dutch guy showed an old, 190X receiving apparatus replica he built using mahogany wood, that used a moving metal belt creating a magnetic field inside magnets, which then converted IF into sound. Very, very interesting. U&nfortunately I didn't get his web address, but maybe there is someone with this info. It was in hall B1 or B2. Excellent show but compared to US shows, expensive. In Europe there is VAT (Value Added Tax) on new products - 19% in Germany - which of course is not charged on second hand products. Most of the camp went to bed way WAY past midnight and if the farm cockerel didn't wake you up at dawn then the jets taking off at 0600 will. 6) Friendly people. We shared beer, food and stories and the camp was a real United Nations. I went round the camp on Saturday evening counting flags and car stickers and found 22 countries represented. 7) If you come bring Euro notes and coins. There is one ATM and one small bank and they seemed overwhelmed. 8) A handful of pretty girls including a spectacular blonde in a black & white outfit on one of the stands in Hall A on the Sunday. Finally............... 9) The Hilberling PT-8000 is alive!! The project has been taken over by Telefunken and they promise to release the rig to the public by the end of the year. Tanakasan | ||

| The final visitor numbers were 17,400 and I think this beats Dayton, although I am not sure. Regarding hotels, I booked two weeks before the show started through the organizers and got a room with shower at a B&B (Gasthaus) nearby for 35 euro ($45)/night, about 2km from the airport (which is on the other side of the fair grounds). I picked up some vacuum condensator for very good prices. What's mekka for the moslim, is Friederichshafen for the ham. | Well, I did all three days at HamRadio and my feet are still reminding me - I've missed only 2 years in the last 20!!. It certainly was not as crowded as last year - there seemed to be more open space this year. But, in the past at the old exhibition centre - there you had real crowds. Sadly, the attendance seems to decline year on year. The attendance figures will be interesting. The fleamarket was excellent as usual.
