2013-01-28********SCAMS********
A person claiming to be Jason Steckel responded to my wanted ad for a Kenwood TS-830 M and said he had one for sale.

I asked for a picture of it and he sent me a picture of a Kenwood TS-830S, when I responded back that wasn't what I was looking for he sent me another picture of an M model that was supposedly his rig. suspicious, I googeled the pictures and found where he'd stolen both pictures from. DO NOT buy anything from this person, it is a scam!

WANTED: Yaesu FT-857D Main Board (OLD)

Date Posted By Category User IP
2013-01-15********SCAMS********
I recently ran an ad looking for a main board for my Yaesu FT-857D.
The first response was from an Amateur in NY looking to help me get
the radio repaired. A really nice guy; a typical Ham. Next I get
email from someone saying he has the part I need, but doesn't
include his callsign. His English is sketchy and has no
punctuation; not so unusual today, actually.

Naturally, I ask for the callsign. Jerry sends it back and ask if I
want the part. It's an old callsign belonging to an Extra on the
east coast, so I call him up on the phone. Sure enough, a scammer
has hijacked his call and it's happened to him once before.

Be very careful. Anyone can read and respond to these classified
ads. The header on this jerk's email ran two pages. The longest
header I've ever seen. Probably no way to ever find this guy and
certainly no way to recover any $.

Eddie Wood answered my want ad, and I got excited about finding the piece of equipment. But there was something about his response that made me curious. Checked the SCAMS section and there he was. See the listing from 12-20-2012. Be careful, get pictures, ask specific questions, and get specific answers. I have iginored his reponse.

Scammer Posing as Burton Fisher, K1IOK

Date Posted By Category User IP
2012-12-23********SCAMS********
I received a bogus solicitation from some scammer identifying himself as Burton Fisher K1IOK. The offer was obviously a scam as the picture he sent of a 9.8 out of 10 amplifier showed a busted tube socket and broken tube. I contacted the real K1IOK who disavowed any knowledge of the sale of the amplifier.

Apparent scam from someone claiming to be
KB5RM. In a response to my WTB ad. I
communicated with him via a yahoo e-mail
account. After some research I discovered it
is not the real KB5RM's e-mail address.
I notified KB5RM of the issue.

Beware of Eddie Wood. eddiewood@yahoo.com. He asks for personal information and sends a picture of the equipment he says he is selling. I have no doubt that the picture is not one of his equipment. He made contact with another ham (VA3ITA)) and that ham reports the IP is in the UK.

AL-80A

Date Posted By Category User IP
2012-12-19********SCAMS********
I received a solicitation from Eddie Wood at eddiewood403@yahoo.com for a AL-80A amp at $600. He strangely asked for my shipping address. He included a picture of a AL-80A. Since he sent the offer directly to me and not via eHam or QTH.com where I had posted an inquiry, I suspect this is bogus.

scam alert

Date Posted By Category User IP
2012-12-18********SCAMS********
Yesterday I posted a want for a Kenwood TS-790, today I got an email from someone claiming to be KE7KVA (Clint). He said he has one for sale and forwarded pics, BUT indicated he already shipped the radio to me and wanted a "Money Gram" sent to him in order to forward the tracking number??? RIGHT!!! If anyone knows how to get a hold of the real KE7KVA, please advise him that someone is using his call sign and other info to attempt to scam fellow hams.

Paid for a Yaesu FT-100 from him on QTH.com site. Never received radio, got lots of excuses and now after a month the emails have stopped. Pathetic that one "ham" would do this to another. I'm out close to $500 bucks and James the scammer has dropped out of sight. WARNING-Do not be enticed by this "ham". I see others here have been scammed and sadly I did not check here before buying. NOTE** He still has my item and others listed on this site!

Postal Money Order Scams

Date Posted By Category User IP
2012-12-06********SCAMS********
PLEASE CLICK ON THE TITLE SO IT IS EASIER TO READ AND NOT ALL RUN TOGETHER.

Many hams insist upon payment by US Postal Money orders.

Do you know the following:

1) It coud be stolen.
2) It can be a forgery.

Let's start with number 1.

What can you do to protect yourself? In what order should you proceed that will give you the most piece of mind?

Yes, Post Offices are broken into and money orders are stolen. Has a Postal worker ever stolen from the Post Office?

IMPORTANT INFO JUST RECEIVED 6-DECEMBER-2012 FROM R.L. A KIND GENTLEMAN:

Also you can add there is a postal phone number you can call, the money order verification number is 866-459-7822 to verify the
serial number on the money order as being valid. I call the number when I get a money order. If it's valid I ship right then. It has never failed me in 15 years and about 100 money orders. If it has been forged orcounterfeit the serial will not show up on their computer when you are on the phone with them. THANKS A LOT R.L. FOR THAT VERY IMPORTANT HELP.

A) Go to any PO. Ask them look up the number and tell you if it has been reported stolen. If the clerk will not do it then ask to speak with the Postmaster.

B) If it is not on the list then ask to cash it.

C) If they don't have the total amount on hand ask when is a good time to come back. You may also ask them if they can exchange the first money order for another one or two if you are really scared.

Now on to Number 2 Forgery.

A) Look at the ZIP code of issue and compare that with the sender's.

B) Feel the paper and try to smudge the ink.

C) Look at the printing for poor quality.

D) Take the money order to your bank. Ask them to look at it and ask their opinion. Again if the clerk won't help ask to speak with the manager.

E) Tell the sender you will have wait 7 business days to ship. That is not going to go over to well but if you feel good about the sender then you decide to ship or wait.

A personal observation from the writer:

I have delt with people who are to paranoid to send me something to my Wyoming address because the FCC only posts Ham's registered address. Does anybody have a second or vacation home? I do. One ham was so scared that he would not accept any form of payment not even cash. I send gifts to my ham friends some times. Do you. Use common sense. In the end trust your gut feeling.

Next installment when I have time.
PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL ME ABOUT THIS I DO NOT HAVE TIME TO ANSWER OR READ EMAILS ABOUT IT UNTIL MAYBE JANUARY.

IF WE WORK TOGETHER MAYBE WE CAN REGAIN AT LEAST SOME OF THE TRUST I REMEMBER WE HAD AS A BROTHERHOOD WHEN I STARTED IN HAM RADIO 52 YEARS AGO, 1960.

Until then. Be careful and try to be sensible not paranoid.

I new it was a scam from the beginning so I ask him to send me a pic of the FT-920 on the 6 meter DX calling freq. I never heard from him again.

Western Union

Date Posted By Category User IP
2012-11-27********SCAMS********
Never, EVER, use Western Union to buy stuff on the internet, including right here on eHam. There are maggots on the net who want to be paid via Western Union who intend to rip you off. They even pose as licensed hams who have something you want at a really good price.

Research your seller and if you have any questions, please contact me for an official opinion.

Answered my add for an Icom 737A
photos showed 737, not the A. Using call K5YDR. Claims he is in Texas at his daughter's house because of illness. I asked questions before making an offer, did not confirm an offer, but asked if he would take an offer. Here is email he sent.I will accept your offer my daughter will be shipping the package to you on my behalf just like i said earlier and i would like you to send the funds to her. She suggested you send it via Money Gram Transfer or MO because there is one close to the courier office so it would be easy for her to walk in and get it cashed and also due to the nature of her job ( Nurse ) she's always busy most times.

Here is her details below:

Karen Morton
PO Box 40794 Fort Worth TX 76140.

Get back to me with the tracking when you post the MO out or payment details and a scan copy of the receipt if Money Gram.

SCAM ALERT - KF5RSC Imposter

Date Posted By Category User IP
2012-11-20********SCAMS********
There is an internet Scumbag posing as KF5RSC and using email address

kf5rsc@ymail.com

answering wanted ads trying to sell prospective buyers what they are looking for at bargain prices. Mr. Scumbag insists on being paid via Western Union.

Be careful out there. If your seller insists on Western Union, your best move is to walk away from the deal.

The REAL EDWIN GARDNER AA5VV is SK

Date Posted By Category User IP
2012-11-15********SCAMS********
It's a shame when a callsign from
an SK gets besmirched with a scam.
Beware of offers to sell gear from
EDWARD A GARDNER
[aa5vv@rocketmail.com]

The amateur who once owned AA5VV
from Louisiana evidently passed
away several years ago and his call
has expired. I placed an ad looking
for a AL-1500 and got a nice email
with an offer to sell a New in
Box/Old Sock amp from the above
email address. I offered to buy
immediately with PayPal, this
fellow responded with "Western
Union or Moneygram." I countered
with "Postal Money order to your
QRZ address" and suggested we speak
over the phone. He responded with a
postal address for someone else (!)
in West Virginia and called me with
a "Blocked" caller ID. I did not
answer, as I choose not to do
business with people who exhibit
this sort of flakiness. The REAL
AA5VV would be over 80 years old
and would likely not go to this
extent to conceal himself,
particularly if he were dead.

Caveat emptor!
