I recently got a new Yaesu VX-8DR.

I don't have a GPS unit yet but I've setup all the APRS settings I can, along with my home coordinates.

I am able to recieve transmissions from other stations, I have even received APRS beacon transmissions from the closest digipeater to me.

However, I have transmitted my APRS beacon several times but I never show up on websites such as findu or aprs.fi

I even tried sending myself an APRS message, like in this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axcX7zWJjgU but I never get it, it tries up to 4 times I believe.

Here are my settings:

APRS Modem: 1200bps
BEACON Interval: 30secs
Digipath: Wide 1-1, Wide 2-1
My Callsign: KJ4OHH-7

I currently have transmit set to manual and I've been manually transmitting a beacon from within the APRS station screen.

I've also turned on auto transmit for a while and let it transmit about 4 beacons on it's own.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It seems very odd to me that I can't even receive messages from myself...

Not familiar with vx-8
however just for giggles in your
digipath maybe "APRS via Wide1-1,Wide2-1
without a target "APRS" or similar your packets would bounce around and never make it into the system...
If however the VX inserts this automatically you may just not be radiating enough signal to be heard.
Just a wild guess.

Drive to the vicinity of the nearest digi and see if it digi's you. I set up my home digi/Igate because our main digi would not pick up the 5 watt packet from my TH-D7 since I live in a valley. Good luck.

I thought about that as well (not having enough power to reach digi). I have ordered an SO239 to SMA cable to let me connect the ht to either my j-pole antenna or my truck antenna.

Hopefully I will get better results then... I also plan on purchasing the GPS add-on the next paycheck or so

Drop the -7 after your call sign and aprs.fi will pick it up. I don't know why, but I fixed the same issue that way.

The -7 should not matter. I am running AA4HA-7 using FX-8DR and it works fine.

According to http://aprs.fi KK6EY has been transmitting location MAY25, 26,27, June8,12,19.

If you are out of range of a node or repeater, then you will not get your position noted.

My radio Vx-8dr has been to the depot anumber of times already for this issue. You are not the only one.

I have had my radio right next to a repeater and still will not pick up. Vertex standard cannot figure out why this is happening.

It appears that some radio's are just CRAP they have replaced almost everything on mine. I was at AES of Orlando and put my call sign into a new radio and in almost 1 mins I was picked up. Some of the radios are just crap and Yaesu Refused to replace. I still have the same problem even though I have drived all over Orlando.

That is WAYYYYYY too often to beacon. Many digi's will ignore APRS packets from the same station if they beacon too often. Try setting the beacon for every 3 minutes and let it run for a while and see what happens.

I'm having the same trouble. I hear the tones indicating my APRS is working, but I never show up on the map. It is quite frustrating.

Two suggestions:
1) Make sure you are transmitting on the VFO B side, not A. It will not work on A as per the VX-8DR manual. Someone else also mentioned that.
2) If you are trying to transmit from inside or near a building, get outside in the clear (you didn't mention where you were trying to transmit from). Being near a window will generally not work. I found that transmitting from inside by my office window from the second floor only worked sporadically. As soon as I went outside, however, the callsigns started coming in like crazy and my callsign came up immediately after transmission.

Good luck. I have really enjoyed my little rig and the APRS has actually started to become a bit useful (especially for the XYL).
