Remote HF Rig to buy
« on: January 23, 2015, 05:16:57 PM »

Hi all,
Well I've got power and rv trailer about to be hooked up at my remote site.  4G LTE internet is available, and now to decide what rig to buy now....

Omni VII seems viable but does it require a faster internet connection?

Kenwood 480 is king of this mountain. You can remote it without a PC in loop.

Kenwood 480/480HX is simplest rig for remote.  You can use Kenwood  software along with something like Team Viewer or Logmein or go first class with Remote Rig which requires no computer once things are setup.

The Omni07 has got to be the simplest one to remote, all you have to do is forward some ports and plug the Ethernet cable into the router. Will need to set the IP address within the radio as well.

You will need an internet uplink speed of about 600Kbs, anything much lower will cause stuttering on TX.

I've had my Omni 07 running remote now since it came out 2007 or thereabouts. I hardly look at as it's been so reliable.

I would recommend you have a look at N4PY's control software for the Omni07 as it is very user friendly.

I have also used my TS480HX with the Remoterig modems and that worked very well. I found this combination to work better on  lower B/W internet connections as the Remoterigs are more efficient in their coding. It also had less latency in the system.

I also use a IP controlled power bar on my remote stations.

Cheers!

Yup.  OMNI 7 is what we've been running at the EOC for about 6 years now, albeit with less than optimun antennas.
Tuner went south but TT got that working again.  And it's a GREAT radio as  well!

Hi all,
I haven't checked the forum for a while, and didn't realize others had responded.

V1.4 for flex came out and guys are having success using VPN.  It would be really cool if I can get it running remote.

Any remote that requires a computer to operate is not best solution. Nice thing about remote rig for 480 is no PC is required on either end.

I use the TS-480 with RemoteRig on CW, digital and SSB; contesting, ragchewing and everything in between.  I highly recommend it.

I've been going back between the two.  The new K3s is leading as of today.  It's a lot more expensive but I think I'll like it more.  The trailer is coming this month, so I'm bullish that I'll be operational remote in about two months.  Huge step for me ...about 3 years in the making.

Jumping in a little late here but I am interested in possibly doing this. Am I correct in understanding that using the remoterig.com equipment and the TS480 that the radio is in location a with the antenna and the TS 480 control head is in location B and they are connected through TCP/IP?
thanks

Yes that's it,

I finally purchased the k3s for the remote site and the k3/0 mini for the control site.  Then, to my chagrin, I ran into an issue with the Verizon router.  To run remoterig, you need to be able to program the router to port forward three remoterig apps.  But when you configure the router port forwarding, you need to enable both tcp and udp protocols.  The Verizon router allows you to select one protocol, but not both.  So I returned it, and when I return from my Christmas trip, I will by a commercial router that will allow me to program the port forwarding correctly.

I'm almost there, but I'm just staring out with a 103 ft doublet for an antenna.  I'm shooting for the towers to go up in 2016.  This has turned into a big project!  We get a lot of lightning, and I have even begun to address this issue....

Posters assert that a remote rig should never require a computer. I don't muchly agree with that, things might be very convenient with a radio that has remoting abilities built in but those are few. Correct me if I'm wrong but seemingly a computer at the remote location does not have to have a keyboard, mouse, or monitor once it's set up. It requires a power supply, mobo, and a sound card. Remoting can be accomplished by any number of choices of apps either via LAN or WAN. I've experimented with Win7's remoting facility [sucks] and Splashtop [seems adequate]. I'm guessing that adequate hardware can be finagled from ebay for not a lot of money, depending on how much you want to spend on a soundcard.
