Help??

I need help learning some code.

PS---I have a UNO hooked to a AS3935 lightning detector board...its working(I guess??!!??...no storms yet)
but would like to add some code to trigger a relay when it detects lightning.

Ok....will post here.. maybe someone can help.
1st---I don't need help with the hardware..just the code.

Arduino Uno with AS3935 Lightning Detector. Here is the board/code I'm using.

http://www.playingwithfusion.com/productview.php?pdid=22

The code is at bottom of page.

I "think" its working via the serial monitor window.

Now...what I need is to alter the code so that when it detects lightning at greater than 12Km it will set
pin 7 high for 5sec..

or

When it is LESS THAN 12Km it will set pin 7 high for 5sec AND set pin 8 high for 10min.

What I am trying to do is:

Lightning greater than 12Km...it turns on a light for 5sec

Less than 12Km it turns on that same light for 5sec and disconnects my antenna for 10min.

Like I said...I can handle the wiring/hardware...but I don't know crap about coding!!... HELP---Anyone?!?!

Ohhhh and also.... both the 5sec and 10min timers would need to reset if it detected another strike before
either timer ran out.

If you don't know how to do it, start reading:
Start with this free book
http://playground.arduino.cc/uploads/Main/arduino_notebook_v1-1.pdf
And then buy Brian Evens book, Beginning Arduino Programming
Also, keep this open in your browser, and refer to it while understanding the syntax.
http://arduino.cc/en/reference/homePage
Look at their simple example programs and learn from them
http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/HomePage
Then for interfacing with more complicated devices, you need the code libraries
http://arduino.cc/en/Reference/Libraries

Personally, I would stay out of the forums, unless there is something specific you are looking for. I find them mostly a waste of time. The best benefit is reading the books and the example programs.
The lighting board looks pretty neat, good luck,

there is a QnA group at arduino.cc as well if you poke about the site a bit.

Hey, I like playing with Arduinos as much as the next guy, but how are you planning on disconnecting your antenna? A relay?

You do realize that the lightning just jumped several thousand feet right? That .05" between the relay contacts isn't much of an obstacle.

I mean, it's a fun project and all, but seriously... use a lightning arrestor. Hook the output to a beeper so you know when lightning is close but still distant. If it's close you'll know it.

RE"You do realize that the lightning just jumped several thousand feet right?"

1,000s of feet??.....WOW...didn't know that.
I just sold my CB last week and got my 1st amateur radio, so I'm still
learning all this stuff. I did get my rubber duck mounted to my hardhat last night, just
need to install the ground wire now.

Thanks for answering my original question.

N8CBX had the best advise.

RE: N8CBX

Tnx for the reply...I have bought 3 books already..and I'm learning SLOWLY.
I understand I need to poll  the distance and am thinking it will be a
"IF" and "ELSE" routine . Then the "Blink without Delay" to pull pins high...so the program
keeps running....  The last time I wrote any code was 35 years ago in BASIC

10 Print "Hello"
20 GOTO 10

That's what I know about coding! ..ha
And I will have to learn it..don't think this will be a copy and paste deal.
Back to Kindle and more books. Tnx again.

Tnx Bill,,,

I joined it awhile back.
The project is on hold till next winter....ya know...summer is busy, busy.
The detector is working....but I have found(via datasheet) that at best...only
detects 40%, and thats VERY close-in. over ~10 miles and its much lower.
Should have read the datasheet 1st,,,,would not have spent the money/time.

Tnx
