I have a Samsung S4 phone at work and its not activated.  Makes a
good smaller Pad.   As long as there is Wifi access there is no loss
of functionality save for actual phone use.  I use a spare Iphone 4gs
the same way.  Both have a software 3rd party (internet) phone
software that works fine when Wifi is available.

The only thing with that is if you away from wifi its limited to GPS
and functions like calculator or other non network dependent
applications.

I appreciate all the input and suggestions.  I finally set up wifi on it and it worked with no issue. But it wants me to set up an ID, (assuming for Google ?). But I checked out Google ID and they want a phone number, but yet some say it isn't required now? So did anyone have any issue trying to sign up with Google ID and not providing a phone number?

The phone number is not for the smart phone but for the Google ID itself.

So if I have apps that don't depend on wifi, those apps should continue to work, right? I'm looking to use this smart phone for like PSK31 and other digital modes as a simple (and minimalist) interface with the FT 817. I want to put it all in small box and be able to use PSK31 directly with the FT 817.

Also use it when I get the ID51A with the Android app (and cable) to do D-RATS and text messaging and file transfers (if I need to) in the field for potential Ecomm uses. Do all this with a small device (smart phone) and not have to lug around a large tablet or netbook.

If the app is worth getting, I don't have an issue paying for it. The Wolfi interface is $40 and $20 for cables, that is still cheaper than the standalone device called Nue PSK at $220 to $320.

If you use Android for PSK31. What app and set up do you use? How much is it? What are your recommendations?

Is there any packet apps for Android?
Winlink 2000 for Android?
Some kind of Android Packet Radio based email, text or file transfer?

Thanks
