I asked this back in 2013 and never really got a useful answer.

I have a Tokyo Hy Power 1.2KFX that I would like to use between 4 Mhz and 5 Mhz. Every time I use it the amp it shuts down when it hits 200 watts.

SWR reading are fine, should I be using the 40 meter band switch or the 80 meter band switch?

Here is what posted posted before;

"I know this thread is somewhat old, that said I have an HL-1.5FX and when I use it on MARS freq in the 4 - 5 Mhz range the unit shuts down.
SWR is perfectly flat, as soon as I get over 200 watts out put on the amp (20 watts drive), I get the O Drive shut down."

Is the amplifier built for use outside of the amateur radio bands?

My SGC amplifier is made for such use.

What does the owners manual say?

It makes no reference to "Out of Band" use.

I think, most likely, when you select the 80m band on the amplifier that it's band pass filter is designed to suppress all RF higher than 4mhz.

Band pass filters are not perfect, and that is why you get some power output between 4 and 5 mhz.

I think you are asking the amplifier to do something it is explicitly designed to prevent.

For comparison, my SGC 500 watt amplifier is set to band 3,which according to the owners manual supports 4.2 to 7.7 mhz. It is rare for me to use Mars frequencies outside of this range so I leave the band pass filter on band number 3 almost all of the time.

My amplifier is designed for use on all HF frequencies, but I think your amplifier is designed for use only on the amateur bands.

N3ZH, I was able to get it to work using the "40 Meter" setting as you had mentioned. I would be curious for reference sake what the various band passes are on your SGC 500 to see if they line up or are close to that of the Tokyo Hy Power.

Thanks again for your help.

I don't know if this is the same issue but I had this problem on 10 meters. The amp would go into protect mode.  I discovered there is a cable that you need to unplug to prevent the amp from thinking it was trying to be used on 11 meters.

Like I said, I don't know if this solution will help in this situation but you should try the THP Yahoo group.

I use the 1.2KFX on MARS with no problems.    The band settings switch in different low pass filters.
On 5 megs use the 40 Meg. position.  That is a filter with has roughly a  7.5 meg cutoff as opposed to the
80 meter setting which has roughly a 4.5 meg cutoff.   You do have to be sure the SWR doesn't creep up
on 5 Megs.  I find the amp very sensitive to SWR.
