Stereo alternative to Skype?
« on: June 22, 2015, 04:05:58 PM »

I run my K3 remotely.  It has the sub receiver for split operation.  I'm currently using Skype for audio, but since only mono, the main and sub audio streams are merged.  Would be nice to have stereo to keep the two receivers separate in the earphones.  I don't need or want video conferencing, just audio.  Also some time ago I tried Mumbles as an alternative to Skype.  Worked ok (but just mono, like Skype) but some audio artifacts when listening to very weak audio.  So I went back to Skype.  Any stereo suggestions?

Hi,

If you use Linux to run Skype, you could run two instances of Skype at the same time -- on each end you would just need two different Linux users and two different Skype accounts set up.

Hi,

Looks like in windows you can add a command line switch to run a second instance of skype:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe" /secondary

I would try that.  You may need to set up another skype account and would have to specify different input devices, but I think it should work.

I'll give that a try.  Thanks for suggestion.  John.

I'll give that a try.  Thanks for suggestion.  John.

You could use something like Unreal Media streaming server, and set the profile to whatever bit rate and channel mode you like, then run Unreal Streaming Media Player on your remote PC. It has very low latency and is pretty straightforward to set up. I use it for remote receiver operation alongside HRD. You could continue to use Skype for the transmit audio side.

IP-Sound is stereo, full duplex.  I use it on Windows and it also works on Linux using Wine.  In conjunction with No-IP and the proper router settings, it will work anywhere.  Different audio/digital bandwidths can be selected with different codecs depending on how much Internet bandwidth you have and how much latency you're willing to put up with.
