"OFFERED HERE FOR SALE ..."
« on: June 23, 2015, 06:42:13 AM »

The phrase "OFFERED HERE FOR SALE..." has been in so many fraudulent responses to WTB ads that it should be considered a good indication of an attempted scam.

If I saw that phrase in the first few lines of a response, I'd immediately trash the response.

If someone purporting to be a U.S. ham uses that phrase, RUN FAST!  It's not an Americanism!!!  And it's not something that a foreigner trying to assimilate himself or herself would say!

I see 'it's excess to my needs' used quite frequently. Im not saying they are scams, just odd.

What about immigrants that come to America and have not been totally Americanized? Which in my opinion is a good thing. Just because they are different does not automatically make them bad or a scammer. Classic example of profiling. While it may be true some of the time, it is never true all of the time. Which is why you need to do your homework instead of profiling.

And yes I have experience with it since my wife is from the Philippines.

that's a good point -- difficulty with English does not necessarily indicate a good or bad buyer.

and -- as far as immigrants that come to America and are not totally Americanized -- most of them still speak English and have yet to even begin to learn a truly American language like Navajo, Cherokee, Lakota, Ojibwe, etc.  ;)

While their ancestors may have been here far longer than mine, every human's ancestors on this continent came from somewhere else.  Even those who label themselves "Native Americans".   ;)

the Bering Strait theory becomes less accepted with each passing year.  Indigenous Americans have been here for tens of thousands of years and there is even a possibility that Asia was populated by ancient Americans, or that any temporary land bridges were two-way streets.  In the light of recent studies of the diveristy of Native American languages -- and the geographic dispersion thereof --  the Bering Strait theory starts to look as shadowy as the old racist notions that accompanied it when it was first concocted.

No, it isn't an "Americanism" as such, but it is how more cultured and civilized people--such as from old England--would speak.  Try listening to an auction from an antiques dealer, or from an expensive auction house (Sotheby's, for example) and you would hear such expressions all the time.  Offered here, offered here for your consideration, offered here as an example, etc.

In short, just because you hear phrases and terminology that sounds strange to you, don't criticize lest you be classed as an uncouth ruffian yourself!  (The last was said in jest.)

I think a Mp3 player is the technical limit to that segment. For some reason I doubt if we'll see it used here. :)
