Could Navy MARS Have Made a Difference in Chattanooga?
« on: July 18, 2015, 12:50:44 PM »

First, before I begin, I am not asking this because I don’t have a sense of extreme disgust in my gut over what happened.  I do.  My son-in-law is Air Force.  I simply believe that if there had been a radio-based alarm of some sort that could have been activated by the press of a button, all military installations within a given radius could have been instantly alerted to lockdown and take cover.

Navy MARS is not worth its cost, however small, say the upper echelon.  But, if it was a MARS-based digital, auto-alert system, perhaps some lives that were lost could have been saved.

Why not a simple phone call?  Too much time required.  Or an “app” for cell phones?  Nefarious persons could disable phones very easily, whereas a battery-powered digital transceiver would be unaffected.  Frequency a concern?  HF spread spectrum, if thought necessary.

Sure, it’s easy to Monday Morning Quarterback, but it hurts like Hell to think that 5 military lives were lost that might not have been if they’d been alerted to the kook and would have had the time to take cover or arm themselves.

The only way Navy Mars could have made a difference is if they had bunkered the reserve center by piling radios in front of the building.

Let it go.  Navy Mars is gone.  It no longer has any purpose.

Hello: Piling  radios up ain't no solution. The military ,like your average policeman, should be able to go armed- ON or OFF DUTY. A person with an urge to do bodily harm to someone else just might think twice if he thought his victim could respond -in kind. My  two cents worth. Bunky, K4EJQ

An early warning is part of a solution to limit damage.  I would agree with respect to being armed.  Or, at the very least, have arms close at hand to use to defend themselves.  Maybe not on their person, but in a desk or someplace readily available.

Most, if not all, military personnel have to qualify with firearms of some kind as part of basic training.  Probably more training than a lot of law enforcement officers get.

You called it, friend!  Congress, military "leaders", and others have turned our military installations into Gun Free Zones.  Anyone who hasn't been asleep the last 15 or so years will know that these "active shooter" terrorists go where they stand the best chance of racking up high body counts before police (civilian, DOD, or other) can arrive and take them out.  The Gun Free Zones are nothing more than Free Fire Zones for terrorists and other loonies as they have little or no worries of being interrupted by armed citizens, or in this case, members of or "Armed" Forces.   This travesty needs to be changed, ASAP.

Since it should be reasonable to assume that virtually all of our military men and women are firearms experts, it seems idiotic to disarm them.
That is NOT a reasonable assumption.  Even for the Army and Marines, the average GI is just....average!  Probably safe enough to keep from shooting himself in the foot, most of the time, but not an expert.

While the Army and Marines train all their members fairly intensively, that is not true of the USAF and certainly not true of the Navy.

Most of this is more blowhard bravado.  Let the units take care of themselves.  The reservists have a lot more to do on drill weekends and having every Tom, Dick and Harry carrying a gun, just creates hazards, wastes time and interferes with their training.  And, yes, I"m a retired reservist.

I spent 10 years on active duty in the Navy (Aviation Electronics Tech) and hadn't carried or fired a weapon of any type since boot camp, unless you want to count loading a nuke on an aircraft.

The notion that  military installations,  which are the targets of murdering terrorists, are "gun free zones"  amazes  me.  And, I DO have the t shirt.
