Looking for Father's (SK) Call Sign
« on: August 12, 2015, 07:47:01 PM »

I am writing this for a new young ham who is a third generation amateur.
His father passed away in 1984 and was licensed in Easton, PA.
His name was James Ira Purdy. Know one recalls his call sign.
Having just passed his extra ticket, Brian Purdy would like to use
his father's old call if its available.
Brian's grandfather was also from Easton and held the call 3AVR in 1922.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Please reply to me and I'll forward to Brian, KM4MIV.
Thank you.

I see the grandfather's call of 3AVR listed, but I do not find another Purdy listed in Easton by searching several callbooks throughout the decades. So, if he was a ham living in Easton all that time, he was not a life long ham. Possibly just a few years. I'm happy to do another search if your friend has some other search criteria for me.

Thanks, Mike. Appreciate your time and efforts in searching for Brian's dad.
I will forward your comments to him and see if he has anything else that may be
a clue.

James I. Purdy, 54, of 272 W. Nesquehoning St., Easton, formerly of Panama and Alaska....

Maybe not an Easton PA callsign?

I should have clarified my earlier post. I did not find a James Purdy in Call Area 3 at all throughout my callbooks. Actually there were very few Purdys listed. So, I would say probably not a '3' area callsign. I also checked a few Foreign callbooks.

Is James Ira Purdy his fathers name, his grand fathers name, or both?

There are some links to some computer searchable scans on this page.
The author of the page also gives some useful hints in working around the limitations of the scans that are available.
