Any other National Radio hams still around?

I see a few at Nearfest but that list has shrunk and many others have likely long moved.

So Carl, from another old fart ham.... are you starting to feel like a dinosaur?  I sure do.

Well Pete I was a youngster of 22 when I joined National right out of the USN and I'll be 75 in 5 more days if that tells you anything.
Sam Beverage, W1MGP, was the last one I know of to go SK and his dad was a cousin of that "other" Beverage.

When I was a kid as K1VKW back in the 60ies, I knew a couple of old National Hams, Russ W1EYZ and Don W1MXC (both SK now), if I remember correctly, Russ W1EYZ even had a National TV.  National used to show off their latest stuff, NCX-3, NCX-5, HRO-500 and NCL-2000 at the local Quannapowitt Radio Club meetings in Wakefield MA.  Steve K4JPN

I had a chance to grab a NCX-5 about 30 years ago from a local ham.  I was impressed with the styling and digital dial. I suspect it was a good SSB rig.  It sure looked like a radio should look.  Very solid and with an attractive package.

That appearance was via an industrial design company in Boston and won a first place award in its category.

The NCX-5, NCXA, VX-501, NCL-2000, and HRO-500 were all included.

The NCX-5 is a good performer. The receiver side is similar to the National NC-183D dual conversion receiver with two RF amplifiers but upgraded in many ways including xtal first mixer and adding an excellent 8 pole IF crystal filter. It handily outperforms a Yaesu FT-101 receiver. Good technology in its day.

I forgot about this thread and just came across it. Is anyone still reading this?

The NCX-5 has the best sensitivity on 10M of any tube or early SS rig Ive tested; The R&D group had them all for evaluation and in later years I continued when I had loaners to play with. The RF stages were not running at maximum gain but like the HRO-60 there was enough to overcome the NF from the mixer and the additional front end selectivity helped in strong signal environments such as during contests.

The 3 IF stages also follow National tradition with the end result of that and the above resulted in a near bullet proof AGC.
