Remote radio for NYC club
« on: December 30, 2015, 12:12:22 PM »

I recently joined a firm in midtown Manhattan, and found that there were three other hams out of a population of a bit over 100 people. I've been approached to see if I wanted to form a radio club and teach a license class, which I'm going to do. Unfortunately it's highly unlikely that the building owners are going to let us put an antenna up there or run cables, so I'm exploring remote radio for hire options.

Is anyone doing this other than RemoteHamRadio.com?

You might want to consider something other than the "for hire" route.  If you have a friend or relative that will let you put up a simple antenna and provide space in a closet or cabinet for a modest station you can be in business fairly easily.  A TS-480 coupled with an autotuner and a ladderline fed 80 meter dipole, a coax fed 6-BTV or both makes an ideal remote setup when coupled with a commercially made "Remote Rig" box.

Midtown Manhattan can be a horribly noisy location for a station even if the company allows you to put an antenna on the roof.  My son lives in Manhattan and has a terrace on the 15th floor but uses a remote station set up at his sister's place in Florida because of the high noise levels in the city.

An ideal remote site would be a spot not too far outside the city that is in a low noise location.

Take a look at www.remotehams.com - very different model than remotehamradio.
