Looking for land line for audio option instead of Skype
« on: January 20, 2016, 11:00:41 AM »

I am in the process of setting up a remote control station at a vacation cabin where my only Internet option is a very slow DSL connection.  500K download and 150K upload.  Due to the complexity of my operation, I need to use a virtual desktop application.  I am currently using Team Viewer 11. This gives me access to my rig control program (Win4K3Suite), Wavenode PWR/SWR display, PSTRotator, W0JEC remote antenna switch controller, and a homebrew VB application for monitoring and controlling my homebrew 1KW solid state linear.

I am using Skype for the audio.  I can get excellent performance with Team Viewer when Skype is not running.  Once Skype starts up the response time of TeamViewer becomes unusable. If TeamViewer isn't running then the Skype audio sounds very clear.

I am looking for ways that I could replace Skype with a POTS line (plain old fashioned telephone).  I need a solution that would auto answer after a configurable number of rings.  (I need this because I also have a cabin temperature monitor that I still need access to).  I have found several auto answer phone patches but they all seem to answer on the first ring.  Is anyone aware of an auto answer phone patch that could be set to answer after 3 or 4 rings?

I would also welcome any suggestions on improving the performance of Skype when also using TeamViewer.

Thanks,

Don

I solved the problem with Skype and Teamviewer so I no longer need the POTS option.  I caused the problem when I had to remove a USB sound card and use the integrated one on the computer.  I wasn't aware of it but there is a setting in the Teamviewer communicate Tab for "computer sound".  This had inadvertently been checked so both Team View and Skype were trying to use the same sound card.  When I unchecked that box the performance issues of Teamviewer went away and both applications are playing very nicely together, even with the slow DSL speed.

the other option that I can think of right away would be a Buffalo-type switch or a terminal server.

I did some testing recently with Kenwood's remote software for the TS-590 and found that it uses 16Kb total bandwidth for radio control and VoIP.  And the VoIP is Internet-direct from the remote to the base, so that's a nice feature as well.  Just chiming in ...

This is somewhat late in the thread but Asterisk and VOIP might work better than Skype but you might need a separate Asterisk server on each end. Of course, the workload would be pretty small and there are a lot of older computers out there with 4gb of RAM that get discarded that could easily do Asterisk.

The advantage might be the ability to forward calls from home (or office) via Asterisk to the vacation cabin.

Of course, that could also be a disadvantage. :P
