Was VU7RG to WC LP or SP?
« on: January 25, 2007, 09:08:56 AM »

At first, I thought I worked the VU7RG on short path at 0130 on 40M. But because the PY's (?) were also so loud (40 SSB), I'm thinking maybe it was actually LP. Of course, at grey line, the ionosphere is in a real state of flux (sorry - bad pun), and we must have had some beneficial ducting going on. They were very loud for about 20 minutes or so each night. I am also surprised that we didn't get drowned out or clobbered by the East Coast or even EU - but that must have been because VU7 was only just getting light, and the D layer was lifting for us as it was starting to charge for them. This would have created the "shield" that prevented the East Coast and EU from working them. And we probably heard the Brazilians as loud as we did because they are in the Southern hemisphere with summer time conditions?

Maybe it was actually multi path? Hmmmm.

Those last couple of night, more like 2100 and later, they were definately coming in LP on 40.  Phil

I'm pretty sure it was LP for the West Coast at 0130 Z - I have gone back and looked at all of the spots and paid close attention to those West Coast hams who have directional antennas and actually listed LP in their spot. I also think hearing the South American (PY?) stations so well on the same SSB frequency is a good clue too.

I have 3 elements up 40M for 40 and I kept turning back and forth and those last couple of evenings LP was much stronger.  Earler in the opn sometimes it was a toss-up, meaning multi paths.

It was definately LP. I was playing with a Christman feed and had the positions on the switch confused. I re-read the section in the ON4UN Lowband DX-ing book and now understand which is the leading and lagging antenna in the phase - relationship.

At VU7RG we had two phased verticals for 40m at the CW camp on Kadmat Island (Site #3.)  Around 2200Z I could work east coast long path up until around 000Z-0030Z when I would switch the phased verticals to the south for long path and work west coast for up to two hours, maybe a little longer.  Fantastic.
