Lew et al,
I don't usually look at eHam, so again, sorry for the very late reply. I do better on email.
No, I wasn't on the DXpedition to Liberty island. I suppose it was after my time. I graduated in 1968. Although I don't remember being too active in the club my senior year. Girls...
The rig at the time in the 60's was a Hallicrafters HT-32 xmtr and SX-111 rcvr. Plus a National NCL-2000 linear, and a VHF rig, which might have been a Clegg 2er or a Gonset something or other. And a Mosley TA-33 or 36 on the roof (spent lots of time up there). I doubt kids are allowed up there now.
My most memorable time was when Marv was operating on 20M USB and started a QSO with some DX station. None of us kids could hear anything but QRN. We thought Marv was making it up. But then came the QSL in the mail some time later. I learned from Marv to listen harder...much harder.
I was in touch with him by email about a year before he passed. It had been ~35-40 years since we were in contact.
