Funny story about educating a fellow.
« on: August 09, 2016, 10:05:44 AM »

Several years ago   while at a ham fest an older gentleman was looking to buy an amp he asked" Is this a good Amp? Well, that all depends on circumstances"  "What Circumstances'?   How many neighbors do you have nearby?   lot's of them.  Then don't buy a MACO amp"  Why not?  the name says it all   It'll  MACO all of your neighbors mad at you"
I still don't think he caught my drift? But, he walked away from it.

Haters gonna hate.

What the haters about steering him from a non-linear amp?  Good advice.    Yeah, fire it up and everyone within a 5 mile radius will know who to come looking for.   They're NOT LINEAR  they have more spurs than Dodge City & Tucson combined.  How I am I a hater steering someone away from a known source of problems?
Send someone to a real linear-amp  that just might and probably will keep the FCC and neighbors off their backs?
Am I supposed to LIE to this guy hoping he'll have problems?   Yeah, call me a hater.

Ever try re-biasing one of those to get it to operate in AB2? Then throw a proper coupling network on the input and output and use the thing as a set of QRP "boots"?

Might not even be necessary if operating in a constant-amplitude mode such as FM or CW, and keeping the drive low enough that IMD products remain below unacceptable levels.

RF power amplifier (re)design ain't rocket science...it's not even the work of a lowly missile technician. That Maco is at the very least a source of parts with which a decent amp can be constructed. Remember: Not every ham can afford a new Alpha or Dishtronix. Some must build or adapt from necessity, and parts is parts.
