DXCC Desk Backlog?
« on: January 07, 2008, 03:48:37 PM »

I submitted my one and only 2007 DXCC Application on December 30th - and have been out of the loop with DXCC and the ARRL in this regard for almost a whole year.

Their backlog looks larger than it used to be - is this a fair assessment? I went to the ARRL website and tried to search for an article on the DXCC desk backlog, but couldn't find anything.

I'm not in a hurry, mind you - just curious. I read a really funny old DX article by WA6AUD (SK - "Cass"), and he really nailed how you feel once you get over 300 entities - and how slow it is to get to Honor Roll. I'm up to 319, so it really crawls at this point. Thank goodness for the low bands!

But I must admit - I worked a lot more DX (and most of it very rare by the way) at the bottom of the cycle.

Who needs sunspots - I don't need no stinkin' sunspots (but they sure make it a whole lot easier).

Yes, it looks like they're over 3 months behind.  They always get jammed up at the end of the year with heavy submissions and those pesky holidays and all.  I've just used LoTW submissions last year but will need to send in some paper before long.  Just before Hamvention seems like a good plan.

They received my last application on Sept 11. Admittedly, part of my paperwork got sent to HB9RG in December, but I got the cards and all paperwork back on January 5 - but only because certain friends at ARRL sorted out what had happened.

You may think it slow being on 319. I just (!) need FJ and KP1 Navassa for #1. Going to be waiting sometime for that one....

Click on the list of logs received, and at the top, it states what weeks filings are being processed.
Last I looked, they were on applications received the week of September 14 (or there abouts)

My application hit their list on November 9th, so I have about a 6 week (or more) wait.

OK,

That SHOULD read "List of applications received" not logs received.

So much for proofreading.....eh ???    ???

Back around 1990, the DXCC backlog was much worse.  I recall waiting 9 months to receive my CW DXCC certificate.

Still, with all the work the DXCC Desk has, Bill, NC1L, is amazingly responsive and pleasant to deal with.  He also handles WAS applications, as I recently found out.

The Lotw seems to be on a roll now, with more and more stations posting their logs.  This can only help as the sunspots heat up (or more accurately cool down!) in the coming years.

I should also point out that DXCC listings get updated much faster than the time it takes to clear all the paperwork.  My last submission was in August, and my totals (as posted on the web) were updated at least a month or so before I got my cards and paperwork back.

The worse the propagation, the more time hams have to go back through their paperwork and submit cards.  I submitted cards this year for 5BDXCC and Honor Roll (everything but North Korea), all at once.  Several HUNDRED cards.  I believe they take their time and do it right.  Hence, the backlog.

I had not made a submission for several years.  I got onto LOTW last year and saw my number shoot from about 278 to over 300 instantly.  So I went through the old cards, started some QSLing for old contacts, and am now at 318.  My latest submission was sent in December 2007 and when reviewed, will bring me to 325.  I will have another submission this year when I have enough confirmations to get 5Band and Honor Roll.

LOTW fired me up to get current.  I suspect the same is true for many others.  Hence, the backlog.
