10 Meters open to California and other states
« on: December 10, 2016, 09:44:01 AM »

There is a CQ contest going on now. I'm hearing NX6T California on 28.407,  K3EST on 28.412  as well as many other states.

Dec 10 2016 @ 12:43 PM

Good Luck

My thoughts, openings are being missed because people are not monitoring.
I wonder if this one would be missed if there wasn't a contest on?

I was alerted because I check dxmaps.com several times a day. I set the search parameters for E-skip for the U.S.A. Right now it shows E-skip at 78 mhz muf over DM43. I don't hear anything now on 10 meters over my area, EM79. The great thing about DXmaps, you can set it up for any parameter you like, frequency, mode, area, region and so on.

I'm sure the earlier California and the recent Brazil station was F2, not E-Skip. But Brazil was there around the same time as Vermont station was, so it was a mixed mode...F2 and Sporadic E-Skip happening at the same time. There is still some F2 kicking around yet, not like it was a few years ago...

Regardless, even though we are in a decline of the cycle, that doesn't affect sporadic E-Skip. December - early January is usually when the lesser E-Skip openings happen with May - August being the primary period. It's worth checking just for the possibility of the sporadic E-Skip. And E-Skip can happen well into the evenings during the primary period of May and August. I would suggest checking again tomorrow.

Someone posted an earlier screenshot of DX Maps for 10 meters at QRZ.  As you can see this was a mixed opening of Sporadic E-Skip and F2.

Sometimes it can be a job to figure out for certain which propagation mode is happening.
Sporadic E, multi hop or chordal hop Sporadic E, F2, TEP, Auroral E or a mixture of modes

For what it is worth, I'm looking at DXmaps.com now at 8:07 AM Dec 11 2016 and see that the MUF is already at 72 Mhz over FM06. However nothing is noted on 10 meters here. Keep checking 10 meters today (as well as DXmaps.com).....

My Saturday highlight was being called V51YJ Saturday AM in the 10M test. Looking at my logs, he manages to call me almost every year!!

Also fine conditions to much of midwest (E-Skip? A big opening in particular to Ozarks) and occasionally open to CA/OR/WA for me too.

Sunday is not shaping up (yet at least) to be as active as Saturday.

South America was in there for a bit this afternoon with F2 from Argentina and Uruguay. Then a bit later some ES to Florida, but that was the extent of it here despite showing promising skip on DXMaps.com.

Saturday was better than Sunday.   Worked FL, TX, and a couple of CA within 5 minutes on Saturday.  Made only 3 contacts on Sunday before giving up, but one was Argentina.

Lately, 10 meters has been opening up out of nowhere!  Best to keep an old CB tuned and squelched on 38 LSB, and you'll get an almost instant alert.  If you don't have one handy, you can set a tablet or smartphone to this website...  www.CBradioClub.com/san-francisco-bay-ca.html

Listening to the IARU beacons on 28200 works too. I use the RBN more now and select the higher HF bands to see who's hearing who and where.

Opened to California and Mexico today for me from Indiana.  My first HF contact in 15 years.

Congrats!  10 Meters can open out of nowhere, so it's always best to keep an 11 meter radio in the shack on and squelched.
