Kenwood TS-440S/AT
« on: January 23, 2017, 04:09:41 PM »

Am looking for someone in Arizona who is a Kenwood TS-440S/AT guy. I have a dead one and would like to get it up and on the air again. It has no sound, no receive it does power up then it just set there looking at you. It’s too large for a desktop paper weight.  It has from all indicators low operating time. For who are familiar with TS 440 will understand this? The vibration material that is used to protection the IF section is still very clear and has not turned dark as they normally due with age and use.  You can send an email to me at WA7SP@tlcsem.com

Not enough info.

Is the frequency display showing?
Is the Squelch control on?
What is the S-meter reading?
Did you set it up "by the book" for SSB operation?

Along with IPF's questions, how about the transmitter?  Does it work?

440's were a trouble prone rig by design and have several known issues. Also, for what it is worth when you start paying 40 per hour plus parts (that are getting scarce too)you can quickly reach a point where it is cheaper to replace it with a newer used rig. Furthermore that rig is 30 years or more old and is at or near end of life cycle and even if repair now could fail again because of other old parts going belly up too. I understand rig may have some sentimental value but there comes a time when you walk away from it and use it as a book end, a conversation piece or a door stop.

I disagree. Other than the potting compound problem they have been relatively trouble free. They were the FIRST 100% duty cycle transceiver and did well. The only times I have had to replace finals was due to power supply failure or lightning. And I have been repairing them from the introduction in Feb 1986.

YMMV

Job security. This is not 1986 or 1996 or 2006 but rather 2017 and rig is well past its prime.
