Certainly not a new craze..I listened on the AM bands back in the mid 40s before I was licensed. As far as below 530 kc i.e. the 500 kc CW distress and calling freq and surrounding commercial tfc freqs is no longer used as far as I know. Takes me back to those days of 500 kc and the 15 to 18 and 45 to 48 min. after the hour silent periods. Nobody transmitted except for distress.

NSS used to send wx info on 121 kc several times a day CW for submarines and ships at sea.

All of that is just history now. Kids today track satellites.

I'd use either an old car radio or 50's tube radio with the built in loop antenna. To hear different directions simply rotate it 90 degrees. They had fantastic reception, better than anything made today.

I love long distance AM listening, but these days, instead of using a broadcast loop, I pull up one of hundreds of online SDR radios.

No, it's not the "old way" but it's another great melding of the net and radio and we all benefit.

Just click on the link, choose a receiver, and input a frequency. There are also other links available for AM Broadcast, etc.

KC8KTN, I agree; it's cheating, and don't worry, I'll always respect your onion!

Have a blessed day and be safe.

Trying to make ham radio like it was when listening was what most hams did a lot of . Have a Joyous Day.

Oh please, not the long-delayed radio broadcasts again. You should try to make ham radio what it was before YouTube.

As long as you stay away from the WALL-WART stores, you should be fine.   ;D
