KB7FHK first year licensed
« on: April 04, 2017, 11:53:46 AM »

I lost a lot of stuff over the years and I can't seem to find the first year I was licensed as a Novice. I remember I tested at a club in Laurel, MD mid to late 1980s. Does anyone know where I could find this info? or maybe have the resource to look it up for me? The FCC doesn't carry my licensing that far back.
Any help would be appreciated. 73

Do you remember your first callsign? Presumably a 3-land one if you tested at Laurel, MD. You can then look up various years of paper callbooks (hamfests a good place to do it) until you find the edition you first appear in, then you know it was that year or the previous year.

Because novice callsigns were sequential it may be possible to narrow it down further (nearest month maybe) by comparing with known issue of other nearby callsigns.

Same CS, KB7FHK, I was in military and used my home of record 7 land in AZ.

I did a little research, and the late 80's ARRL bulletins gave the latest FCC callsigns in each block.

http://cd.textfiles.com/hamradio3/news/al881228/al881228.txt tells me that KB7GER was the highest 7-land novice call issued before Dec 1 1988.

http://www.bvarc.org/newsletter/198901.pdf tells me the that KB7FZE was the highest 7-land novice call issued before November 1 1988.

It seems very likely that KB7FHK was issued in September or October of 1988 but I haven't located other ARRL bulletins to pin it down more precisely.

You're in the 1989 Callbook, which according to the title page is actually Winter 1988-1989.

You can find this Callbook by going to archive.org and entering "Winter_1989_Radio_Amateur_Callbook" in the search box.

The last 2-by-three KB7 call I could find in this Callbook was KB7FVD.  Combined with N3QE's info, this suggests that the Callbook's print deadline was sometime in September or October.
