Growing pains.

Growing pains with 52 years experience? You have got to be kidding. You would expect this from someone with little or no experience and not at what is supposed to be a world class event duh...  Even I know around here you do not bank on parking cars in grass for a large event in May. This is not excusable but will be to the sheep.

Well maybe "moving pains," I suppose. They can fix a lot of this, or at least work around a lot of it.

We all fantasize about "this great facility in my home town," or "that great venue in that fun town."  But until some group wants to seriously compete with the behemoth, we'll be mud slinging for now.

Yup... asking volunteers to drive over two-hours round-trip for site surveys, meetings, set-up, and so on makes the Ohio Fairgrounds an unattractive option.

While I don't necessarily agree with JX's arguments... This is not an argument against the fairgrounds.

Any good size convention center or fairgrounds is going to be used holding large events - so there will be drawings of the facility.
If it is really a mystery as to how to use the space, the organizers could attend an event at the location - and see how those organizers use the space.

Set-up and during the event? Get some hotel rooms for staff nearby..

Competition is good.  Maybe W8JX could crank up a ham convention near Columbus.  Same dates as Hamvention.  Then see who puts on the better show.  Tickets below $22 and free parking (no mud) are a must since hams are cheap.    Will need lots of friends to help organize and drive the scooters.   Shouldn't be a problem.

Let's start putting together a list for JX:

* Ohio Fairgrounds
* Chartered buses for all volunteers
* Ticket prices $5 or less
* Free on-site parking
* No porta-potties
* Internet lines installed for all vendors at cost
* Every building with AC at max

Man, JX, I have to admit, this sounds great!  I can't wait to see what else you have planned.  Be sure to let us know the dates and when we can preorder tickets!

I'll add to that:

An attached parking structure with 20 entrances and exits that would limit the longest walk to 200 feet. If that's not possible, free valet service.
Five start meals served at McDonald's prices.
Scantily clad ladies for eye candy.
Hourly drawing for a $2,000 cash prize, based on ticket number, need not be present to win.
Site to be a minimum of two minutes from at least three super highways.
Indoor flea market, set on a revolving carousel so you can stand in one spot and eventually see everything.
Vendors required to offer a minimum of 50% off all products.
No mud or cow pies within 50 miles.

Man, I can't wait!!

Were you there?

Do you liive here? Did you see morning news with all the damaged grass and mud? Do you eally have a clue to aftermath?? I say no on all three. I was actually surprised at pictures/video on news. It was a mess

I have a few friends that live in Xenia.

They were happy with the turnout, and thoroughly enjoyed the weekend activities.  My friend and his dad decided to attend on Saturday, and now his dad is looking to get licensed.

They reported it's not as bad as you're making it out to be.  They recently had to re-roll the soccer fields because of another event that was held there (It was some sort of cruise night, for trucks).

Gee, JX can't win an argument even when he makes up the scenario!  ;)

p.s. Great job DARA; the best is yet to come!

Congrats to your friends dad!

Any fairgrounds that lend themselves out to outdoor events knows that grass damage is part of the deal. Nothing new about that. Never will be either. Happens all the time.

Some need to find an excuse to feel right in what they said, so they think the world should be shocked that there is grass damage after heavy rains and the event being held. The world is not shocked. Only the doom and gloom inventors are shocked...LOL

I get the sense that he's furious it wasn't the all-out disaster he was praying for.

im sure green county knew that if 30k people show up and they get rain the grass was going to be wrecked. DARA at least has said they are going to help with the fixing, how many big events would actually do that?

I get the sense that he's furious it wasn't the all-out disaster he was praying for.

It was a bigger disaster than many think or will admit. Consider flea market vendors that cumulatively spent well over 100,000 dollars for their spaces in grass that turned to mud first day that many had to be towed out of later (and they even raised prices too over last years that was on old blacktop and gravel not grass and mud). I will bet DARA did not refund those fees.  You know Icom, Kenwood and Yaesu each spend 10's of thousands of dollars to attended shows just in airfare and shipping alone. Then you put them up in a converted farm building with no AC or bathrooms. I will bet they are not happy. If they pull out because of it, and they should, Dayton Hamfest is indeed DOA. I suspect it is only event they attend that has such limited creature comforts.

It amazes me how some of you try so hard to defend DARA on this cluster fart. You would expect a mess up like this from a new comer with no experience and a limited budget and cheap ticket and vendor space prices too. Not for a high dollar event by someone with a club house compound they spent well into 7 digits on in improvements and new toys and with 50 years experience too.  It is as I said all along, DARA only cares about making maximum coin with minimal investment for more to spend on toys and trips to real world class events because they bank on those who will defend them and come even if it was held next to a cesspool. This is why DARA cuts corner and until sheep stop coming they will keep shearing them. As far as 30k attending, I seriously doubt that. I am sure it was inflated for media.

Enough.

You weren't there.  That much is obvious from constant harping on the restroom situation alone; had you been there, you would have seen that there were plenty of them, and that they were clean, well maintained, and more than adequate for the crowd.

So you are not harping on DARA from actual experience, but clearly from a long-seated resentment of the organization that goes well beyond Hamvention.

You have no credibility whatsoever.

Go away.

Actually, I think the phrase is "That Dog Don't Hunt"

Ah sure John. The sheep or any other animals  people attended. You were not there. Attend next year and then you can comment hopefully intelligently.

Until then, its just more fumes generated hallucinations along with an extreme case of OCD. Also known as the JX shuffle! LOL

And it is better to be a troll than you John! LOL

Not nearly as much as it amazes me how you refuse to admit you were wrong and that you are still pissed that DARA booted you out.
