Hello Gents,
Back in the 70's, yeah I've luckily been in this that long, a six meter club was by the name SPESM, which had members in the mid west, was formed. I was a young and a new member, #187.
I haven't heard anything about it in a long time and did an internet search which only brought up articles from the 70's.
Am I the only one left in it? Anyone else even remember it? Is this still in existence?

Sorry, never heard of it but I can guess that it probably melted away after the great whimsical promise that 6 meters was such a fantastic band panned out to be untrue.

Well I remember SMIRK, think it is still somewhat active.

6 IS a great band,... if you have a signal ;)

In just the last 2 days of "casual" operating, I have been spotted by over 350 stations.

Yup, I have one of those. It depends on your frame of reference as to weather it was part of your ham experience. I think my number was 230. It was a Chicago/Wisconsin/Michigan thing. In the mid 70s I also got a SMIRK number of 2061. I pass my SMIRK number each Wednesday night on the SMIRK net in El Paso, TX on 50.130 and not once have I been whimsical or made any promises. I worked Brazil on a J-pole and 95 Watts last sunspot cycle at it's lowest point. Yup, 6 Meters just hasn't panned out.

Hi Tom,
Boy, I haven't heard anything about SPESM in years. During my time living in Rockford, IL. between 1974 and 76, I was active on 6 meters and became a member of SPESM. I was encouraged to join by Ted, WA9FEF and Jack, WA5UUD and a few others. Jack lived near New Orleans and Ted and I usually had a QSO with him every weekend on 6. I'm sorry, but I can't remember my SPESM number, but if I recall correctly, it was a very low number.

Of course I also belonged to SMIRK and hold SMIRK #607 and now have the honor of being the SMIRK secretary, and a Board member. We now have over 7000 members worldwide

Tom, it's great to know there are still some of us old timers who remember SPESM. This is my 57th year as a licensed Ham and I'm enjoying it now just as much as I did at the very beginning. I will admit as an old codger though, I'm not too happy about some of the things I hear on the bands these days.

73 and thanks again for bringing up a good organization from the past.
