Not sure about "ICOM 7000 hands down"......more like Icom 7000 - the driver board's down.........

Seems they have a not uncommon tendency to emit smoke signals in preference to rf signals.

(Cue the "I've had one for three zillion years and never had a problem" - 3,2,1 and.........)

As I said, the ICOM 7000 is an AWESOME choice & I'd take one over ANYTHING Yoohoo & Kenmore has out there in that price range. It's just a SWEET multi band all mode rig with the best filtering & features ever out there in any mobile rig & it makes a great base rig as well.Every company has a rig with an issue sometimes but for my money I'll take the AWESOME ICOM 7000 knowing it's the BEST choice for my money. My friends & I love them because they are SUPERIOR gear to anything out there & we each can afford anything out there but we chose the BEST of the BEST for features & dependability.  8)

The IC7000 driver board is not an "issue sometimes" - it is an issue many times..........

Icom IC-7000 also has a poor modulation. This rig is not to recommend.

Icom stands for I Can Only Monitor for a reason

That reason is because when I am calling in a Pileup or anywhere else it's MY call that I MONITOR coming back more often than not.Sorry if you don't have the same success rate but when you depend on a Poor Excuse for a transceiver such as a Yahoo I'm surprised that you can monitor anything. Not everyone can buy the BEST there is but that is why they make the rest of that crap some folks call radio gear.I'll stick with the BEST Amateur Transceivers that money can buy so I keep right on MONITORING My Call Sign in those Massive Pileups & anywhere else I put my call sign out there while others who don't just keep calling over & over & over again & SCREAMING at the top of their lungs begging for just one reply per day or so.  ;)

What we don't hear is how that manifests itself in everyday operating.  What does low level DSP do or not do that the other radios with higher level DSP do?

It is interesting that in so many years with so many radios that you cannot quickly see the short comings of a 450. Selectivity is marginal at best on SSB, shape factor on CW is a wide 4 to 1 (even a old school analog 480 ...
I guess no one should pay 2 or 3 grand of even more for a good IF DSP because you think that 450 is as good as them dah....

Yeah, AF5CC, what makes you think your owning and operating MANY HF rigs during years of activity makes you as expert as someone who played with an FT-450 once at a ham store?  Plus, your English is impeccable, and I prefer to trust opinions from people whose spelling and grammar are at a second-grade level.  ;-)

I own both the 950 and the 480 now; I think the 950 is a vastly better performer.  But I've only used the 480 for a few dozen contests and a few hundred mobile contacts.  See, I've never spent a few minutes playing with a 480 in a ham store--THAT is where you REALLY learn what a rig is like.  ;-)   --ken

The Kenwood TS-590SG is a bargain under $1000. IC-7300? No thanks.

A used TS590S or SG I have seen used between 750 to 950, thats one hell of a radio for those prices, I have seen used IC7300 for just under a kilo buck as well.

Used Icom 7300.  Very good performance, panadapter, excellent for digital as well as SSB, compact, and very fun to operate.

I will back you up on that 100%.   I have seen several slide by on the used list for from $900 to $1000.  It is the "coolest" radio I have ever owned, and I have owned some of the best for their time.
