FT-857D slow to unkey on Winlink Winmor
« on: June 29, 2017, 05:21:00 PM »

I'm trying to help a friend get on the digital modes and noted an unusual problem with his rig, an FT-857D.  It works fine on VHF packet but using Winmor on HF, it is slow enough switching back to receive after calling a gateway station that it misses the first part of the gateway station's response.  The delay on his Signalink is set to minimum so it isn't that.

Any ideas for a fix?  Is there a setting for this?

Thanks for any helpful responses,

What's controlling your PTT?   I have not fired up digital modes in a while but I recall that you want to let the signallink control PPT and not the digital program on your computer . . . See this page for some help: http://www.tigertronics.com/slusbts.htm

There is a reasonably-active Winmor group on Yahoo Groups:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/WINMOR/info

That would be a good place to ask this question.

One suggestion:

. . . Make sure that VOX is _turned off_ on the FT-857.

With the SignaLink delay set to 0, and the SignaLink VOX circuit generating a PTT signal for the FT-857, the turnaround time should be acceptable.   [The TX/RX turnaround-time value might be in the FT-857 manual.]

Research indicated that it was probably menu item 40, the digital squelch setting (should be at 0); however, before I could check/test this, my friend did a factory reset and everything started working as it should so, whatever the problem was, it is now solved.

Thanks to those of you who responded.
