Hi friends,

 I thought I would asked someone in this forum if they know anything about this.

As many of you know I picked up a new radio and it has APRS. Well there's a little bit of a problem with it.

Sometimes this radio does not always decode the APR S packets that I'm hearing on 144. 39 .

It does decode 90% of them. But there have been a few that have come across the frequency that my radio simply do not even acknowlege or decode. I do not know if this is a firmware issue an issue where the TNC cannot hear the packet audio or what is going on.


Anyone know anything about this?

Drop the squelch (raise the volume) on the radio and listen to the audio of these packets? How do they compare to those packets that decode correctly? Do they sound clean and are they of an adequate audio level?  It's possible that the problem isn't with your radio, but rather the transmitting station. Maybe the quality of the packet signals of the remote station are not that great (ie. distorted, noisy, too high or too low audio level, or multipath).

Do you know if the signals you are trying to decode are from mobile vs. fixed stations (like digipeaters)?

Just some thoughts.....

You are correct about that, some of them are a bit noisy here. But, what did help here was turning the AIP on, on VHF and also too, in my subband I am using for APRS, (left side) is setting the radio for NFM, as opposed to normal FM. Seems the distant packet are decoded more now than before. It cut down on the noise a bit and made the packets easier to decode. I do have some local noise here on 2 meters, which is interesting, it seems to be QRN. Like from power wires or something around here. comes and goes.

Anyhow, that was my fix here.

FWIW in the packet circle the 710 is know as an alligator (1200 baud). For whatever reason it seems to be lacking in the ability to decode all but the stronger 1200 baud packets.
Funny thing is the 9600 baud performance is quite good.
I've witnessed this first hand as several have tried to use these on our local 1200 baud packet
network. They just got frustrated and gave up.
