I have been following the Software Defined Radios for quite some time.   It occurred to me . . .

How does one do a modification to an SDR so one can transmit on the authorized out-of-ham-band frequencies?

In my radios, I disconnected a diode or two.  Anyone know what to do with SDRs?

It's usually done through firmware, which is code that is embedded into the microcontroller or FPGA inside the radio. The vendor defines which features are activated by changing the firmware, which is then sometimes tied to a device hardware ID to make it only work on that one radio.

When I owned a Flex 3000 you needed to contact Flex for the change. I'm not what is involved since I didn't need it. I think Icom is still using the diodes.

I sent Flex a copy of my MARS license years ago for a mod to my 5000A. They sent me a file to open the TX writing to the firmware.
