I'm trying to interface a BR-355S4 gps receiver with a Kenwood TH-D7.

Is there any reason that I can't just wire the receiver into the 2.5mm gps jack on the side of the radio and the supply 5v with a separate pack to the gps receiver? Because that's what I've been trying and I'm not having any luck with it.

I've been told that there's some sort of converter that needs to be wired in somewhere in order to get the GPS to properly communicate with the radio.
