How long did it take you to snag the last 5. As you know - its all about what DX-peditions are in the pipeline vs. ability to work anything around the globe - even at the bottom of the cycle.

I'm guessing it could take me as long to earn DXCC Honor Roll as it has been to get to 323 - since I started in 2001 - which is 7 1/2 years now.

The fun part is that it always seems just when I think some place will "never" be activated again - someone goes there.

That's a little hard to determine, because of my slow progress and additions to the DXCC list that have occurred along the way.  However, I scanned my computer log and found that I had 323 of the current countries worked by 2003, and that number jumped to 325 in 2006 and 329 in 2007.

Now that I'm clinging to the bottom rung of the HR, my goal will be to at least stay there for a while. The upcoming FT5GA and XV4M expeditions will be opportunities for me to work a couple of new ones this Fall.

Thanks Chuck - I can only hope I get my last 5 in four years as you have. It is very possible, and sounds like most people stick with the hunt long after they get to HR - the next is Top of the Honor Roll. Yes, the DXCC program is exactly what keeps me on the radio - and the award / paper isn't the prize at all. Its the fun "fishes" you catch along the way, and the "fish stories" you get to tell (hopefully with cold 807 in hand).

I'm finding that there are anywhere from 2 to 4 needed New Ones every year for me. I'm at 317 and, should my station remain in good shape, I expect to hit 320 by November (Glorioso, Conway Reef and Midway). With Solar Max approaching in a few years, I'm hoping there are more operations from places I need <G>.

Night gathers and now my watch begins. It shall not end until I reach Top of the Honor Roll

Great times are at hand, and soon there will be DX for all—although more for some than for others.

Until recently, I hadn't really looked at an HR listing for years.  I am astonished to find the mixed HR is nearly 17 pages, each with over 250 callsigns, and that those at the Top of HR position occupy more than five of those pages, while those at the bottom comprise less than a full page.

Back in the early 1960's the entire HR consisted of perhaps a few dozen callsigns listed in QST every month.

I'd say the DXCC program has matured over the years (like most of its participants!).

The pileups (especially since the cluster, but even ramping up before that) certainly seem to show that the DXCC program has grown like wildfire.

I remember in the 70's - when I wasn't a DX-er, but worked some DX almost by accident. I would call CQ and DX stations would reply - growing up in NJ - lots of EU, Central and South America. Even KC4AAA,
 I believe.

So Dave - did you start DX-ing with your Novice? If so, 11 years to get to 338 is a really great accomplishment - congrats!

With a sample of "2", it seems like it is possible for me to get to HR within 4 or 5 years. I hope more people post their timeline - I need more data (hi hi).

I got my first HF license in 1993, too late for the 1993 Navassa DXpedition.  I had my Novice in 1963 but it was only good for a year and no DX was worked.  I didn't really get DXing seriously until 1995.  So, in 14 years, I went from 1 DXCC to 337.  If you would please go to Navassa, I could finish this up!  Dave has been at it for 19 years by my math (if he started with his novice).  In any event, he must have worked the 1993 Navassa op.  So that's about how long it takes with reasonable effort.  Did I mention I would like someone to go to Navassa?  Please.

73 and gud DX,

It took me 11 years to get to 328; 338 took 19 years.

Yes, I was hooked on DXing within weeks of getting my novice ticket. I focused on operating in CW so I could pass the 21 wpm extra exam and gain access to the low ends of the bands, which took about 6 months.

With good propagation knowledge, operating skills,  equipment, and software, working the DXCC entities with resident hams can be accomplished in a year or three. Working the rest requires DXPeditions, and all that they entail.

Wade - how long did it take you to get Honor Roll? With your count at 14 years, you must be in line with Dave's 11 years.

Anyway - anyone who has earned 329 or more in any timespan gets my respect. Congrats!

I do wonder what the record is - I will email the ARRL DX Desk to find out.

There were Navassa operations in both 1992 and 1993, and I worked them both to get 6 bands (but not 20m!) in CW and phone, but unfortunately I wasn't yet working RTTY.

I made 328 for Honor Roll at the end of 2005.  So 10-11 years is about right.  I had to go back through some old files to find that.  I think only 328 were required then.  A few "new ones" have confused the system (or at least, me).  My Honor Roll plaque has no date or number on it, just my call.  I guess ARRL has to pay by the character!  Actually, my last three "new ones" were Scarborough, Lakshadweep, and St. Barts.  I worked the Yemen years ago and had to wait 9 years for the credit for 337.  "Life is like a box of chocolates."

AA6TT posted this on a newsgroup in the 90's:

I reached DXCC Mixed Honor Roll in 3 years 215 days (3 years 7 months almost exactly).

I sent an email to the DXCC Desk to see if he still holds the record. That is really amazing!
