TS-2000 serial to USB setup?
« on: October 04, 2017, 09:26:12 PM »

I want to connect my laptop USB Windows 10 to the serial port of the TS-2000 and get MARS working. I believe this transceiver is already modified for the proper frequency ranges. Has anyone performed this exercise before?? Thanks Woody KG4NMX

I bought a generic USB to RS232 cable from Amazon and plugged the DB9 directly into the radio.  Once I had the COM port assigned by the USB driver, I was able to get it to work with all my programs that offered a CAT interface to the TS2000.  If you need to extend the connection from the DB9 to the radio, make SURE that your extender cable has straight-through connections (i.e. Pin 1 to Pin 1, Pin 2 to Pin 2, etc.).

To avoid driver problems, try to get a USB to serial adapter that uses the FTDI chipset instead of Prolific.

Good to know as I tried to help a fella yesterday get the CAT going and we were unsuccessful.  He was going to pursue another cable, and we determined that the one he had just wasn't going to work.

Ditto on the FTDI. It seems solid. Prolific is dicey unless you buy name brand. Many of the "inexpensive" eBay Chinese finds are bootleg and will die randomly after a system update.

I've also had impeccable performance from the Tripplite Keyspan brand USB Serial adapters. The USA-49 4-port has been in the shack for years running legacy PCR-1000's, the FT-847, FT-857D, and Kenwood TS-140S with no hiccups. The single port USA-19 runs alongside the 49 no problem.

I had used a TS-2000 transceiver .I used a RS232-USB cable to connect with my workstation .This cable is two part ,one is RS232 cable ,another is a RS232 to USB transform .I have to load the official USB driver on the PC and the RS232-USB Driver at the same time .Then I can use TS-2000 with HRD and logger32.
I also get a control software made by Kenwood ,This software need to pay .

I simple work around for Prolific chipset is to use a older driver dating from 2015 with chipset. It worked for me.

The best workaround for a cable with a prolific chipset is to replace it with something that works fine all the time and cut the thing in half so it won't mess up any other ham's life

It does work fine unless changing a driver is too challenging for you. Main difference between old driver and new is new one ID's chipset as fake and disables driver and lists device as inop. With old driver it works 100%

Masochistic people wasted hours making youtube videos on different ways to try to live with the $7 prolific chipset cables. I think that the conclusion was you had to stay with XP or face uncertainties about whether your station would work after updates. At any rate, non-masochists probably understand that it's good to get the good cable and be done with it. I recommend destroying the prolific cables so others won't have the unnecessary mess on their hands. Having one less worry is kind of like decluttering, you feel better about things.

Using a older proven driver resolves issue but apparently that simple fix escapes many or it is too challenging for them

I recommend the silicon labs cp2102 chipset.  Works great on the TS-2000.  This is the chipset used by Kenwood for the TS-590SG.  You can order it from AliExpress for $11 incl shipping.  IMPORTANT - Make sure you specify the correct pinout - (2RX 3TX 5G 7RTS 8CTS) and not the null modem pinout.

That works, but newer versions of Windows will update the driver.  You can disable those updates, of course, but then none of your drivers get updated automatically.

I'm open minded about hobbies though, so chase driver problems if that's what you enjoy.  ;D
