Soldering class for amateur radio enthusiasts

Dear all who are interested in amateur radio and electronics. The Middlesex Amateur Radio Club in association with the Zola ham radio group will be holding an introduction to basic soldering class on Saturday, December 23at 11 AM at the Bringham House in Newton, MA located at:
20 Hartford St.
Newton, MA  02461
There will be no fee for this workshop, materials will be provided, and the workshop is expected to take approximately 2 hours. This workshop is primarily for persons who have never soldered before or have let their soldering skills lapse. We are also looking for volunteers to act as mentors and proctors for this workshop. Refreshments will be available at a minimal cost and will be provided free for volunteers. Participants in this workshop may elect to participate in future workshops where more advanced techniques are explored and working devices are made. Although there is no fee for this workshop it is requested that all participants contact our club trustee, Mr. Bob Drukman,WA1UIY, so that we have an accurate head count. His email is:

I think it's very commendable that your club is providing a basic soldering class for amateurs and I can certainly see the multitudes of technicians taking advantage of this opportunity. Many technicians are getting into ham radio at a very basic level of radio and electronics skills so they are the true beginners.   

However, if I were a general or higher, I would be embarrassed to appear at such a class.  And believe me, I'm not one of those "I took the code test and home brewed stuff when I was a teenager" kind of guy.  Nobody taught me how to solder.  I bought a soldering gun, some solder and got right to it.  Didn't read anything, didn't check out YouTube, just did it, made some mistakes, understood what I did wrong after a few attempts and moved forward.  A general or higher class license amateur who can't attach a PL-259 to a piece of coax should not call himself a ham.

The best soldering advice I got from a fellow ham when I was a teenager was "let the WIRE melt the solder".

Worked great for many kits I built later.
