I wonder if this is accurate.  Is the FT-857D now manufactured in China?

I stumbled upon an FT-857D listing in Alibaba (https://www.alibaba.com/showroom/yaesu-ft--857d.html).  Under "About product and suppliers"  it states:
Quote
...The top supplying country is China (Mainland), which supply 100% of yaesu ft-857d respectively. Yaesu ft-857d products are most popular in Northern Europe, Western Europe, and North America. You can ensure product safety by selecting from certified suppliers, including 8 with ISO9001, 5 with Other certification.

Under the product overview for the FT-857D:

This is not necessarily a good or bad thing for the end user (the supplier, Yaesu, should set quality standards regardless of where products are manufactured) but a curiosity as HF transceivers from the Japanese brands have typically been manufactured there as well.

Well, my 2004 vintage Kenwood TS-2000X was manufactured in Singapore, so maybe Japanese offshoring isn't exactly a new thing...

.....but 539,000 US Dollars?  for what?

Anyway, it might also be possible that manufacturers use multiple manufacturing sites for their products.  I wonder if an original Japanese-made FT-857D will become a collector's item then?

I have a Yaesu FT-270 and FT-60, both manufactured in China and there is absolutely no difference between them and the ones made in Japan.  Same with the Beats headphones I have (manufactured in Shenzen, China.)  Extremely high quality...

Something that has gone on for a long time is Chinese companies offshoring to India! If they offshore under the table then we have no real idea where things are made. 3D printing is advancing rapidly, we should be able to print out the equivalent of a pcb with the soldered parts and cases with controls eventually.

I just received a new FT-70DR, the box label indicates the radio is made in Japan, charger and battery is manufactured in China.  This is not a surprise, China is the goto country for low labor costs. Yaesu is no different than any other company, to stay competitive, costs must be managed.

The tech company I work for sells good worldwide including Japan, and in that country there seem to be extra-strict laws about environmental pollution, materials reclamation, and toxic waste.  I am guessing that toxic chemical-based things like batteries are getting more difficult (ie, expensive) to manufacture or process in an environmentally compliant way there.  Apparently China is different, and well it is...  one of my friend's extended family kids works in Beijing for an environmental engineering company that has had its government funding reduced over the past 2-3 years due to the relaxations allowed by the Paris accord.  I find that confusing, but that's what they said.

A similar situation: look up the Alang Shipbreaking yards in India.  An industry that flourished 17 years ago because noone else could affordably tear apart ships that had no more use.  It created thousands of jobs for those in life-ending poverty.  But there was a price in the toxic waste on those beaches and the extremely hazardous working conditions.

Fast forward to 2017, and things are a lot safer in Alang these days, and cleaner than in 2000.  And prices have risen, so the business has moved to even poorer countries with no regulations: Chittagong in Bangladesh, and several locations in Pakistan.

Japanese "manufacturers" are making in China too!

China has the modern high tech semiconductor fab houses.

My 857 works fine, except for the encoder that failed. Nice radio.

Maybe it's time the US government got its military hardware manufactured in China too, to save taxpayer money.  Nothing much actually gets made in the the USA anyway these days.  Even if final assembly is done in the USA, many of the parts come from China or other neighboring countries at the very least.

The USA, in its haste to fulfill it's "gotta have it for the cheapest price" syndrome, has been giving away its ability to make almost anything and everything.  Computers, book printing, cameras, cellphones, printers, clothes, appliances, wire and cable, integrated circuits, printed circuit boards, media companies, and now car production.  In their desire to get fast cash, American companies have been selling off their divisions and subsidiaries, often to Chinese companies which are state-owned or party member managed (a recent example is GE appliances).

Can't say I would particularly seek out a made in USA piece of equipment these days....  China really has the skills now.

The 857D I had was from Japan, I don't know about new ones.
But the new FT-891 I bought a few months ago was made in Japan also.

I have a Kenwood HT from Malaysia and I see pictures of Kenwoods TS-590s from Singapore.
The TS-990s I've seen say Japan.

JVC/Kenwood is probably more likely to use non-Japanese sources since they are such a huge company.

Thought Brazil could be the ultimate dump-country accepting anything being made/discarded there, isn't that all its waste ultimately ends in the Atlantic Ocean? Brazil being too poor, too corrupt to handle it right, anyway.
And finally they've done it, Brazilian energy sector has mainly been given to China (Gov) interest, yessssssss  ;D at least not the case in the US.
You would think there would be some kind of India-type local manufacturing prevailing in Brazil, having to cope with the highest import duties in the whole World, but no, definitely nothing related to amateur-radio down here, one of the most isolated/protectionist (under)developped country in the World  :-[
The (only) good thing is that China imported stuff here is nothing but crap, by-products rejected both by America and Europe, hence won't be enticed to buy Chinese  :D
