171 KHz LW/Morocco coming in tonight
« on: January 01, 2018, 05:03:09 PM »

0100 GMT - Can hear Morocco on 171 KHZ long wave with good usable audio tonight (in AM mode) much stronger than any other recent time here in Florida.

Usually I check their frequency in SSB mode and get a carrier - zero beat and listen for any audio - usually very weak or non-existent but tonight there a easily listenable in AM mode.

UPDATE 0200Z - signal is now really strong! In nearly 50 years to listening on the bands this is the best LW opening I've ever personally heard - if you have a LW radio - I hope you check it out!

I'm only getting a fairly strong unmodulated carrier on 171 kHz in Missouri which I presume is that Moroccan station. I've heard it in previous years.

We usually get best longwave propagation to Europe later, around 0400-0600z. Synchronous AM (SAM) seems to work best with my Flex-5000 for copying Euro LW broadcast audio.

DX conditions on the 630-meter ham band are improving. I copied K9FD/KH6 on WSPR for many hours two nights ago. My goal is to copy a European ham on some mode on 630. That's difficult.

171 has now completed fade out here - haven't tried 630 yet - is anyone using CW there?

eHam has had an active longwave/Mediumwave forum for the past few month that's mostly devoted to the new 630-m ham band where you'll find plenty of WSPR plus some JT9 digital and traditional CW most evenings on 472-479 kHz. The WSPR frequency is 474.2. Typical distance is up to about 2000 miles with some transatlantic and transpacific reports. K9FD/KH6, right on the ocean in Hawaii, can be easily heard thruout much of the U.S. Plenty of Canadian stations and some other DX are on 630-m.

Download a free copy of WSJT-X to decode WSPR and the other digital modes.
