VHF/UHF "MARS MOD"?
« on: February 26, 2018, 12:56:05 PM »

I've seen VHF/UHF rigs with the "Mars Mod" for sale.  Since I have a multi-band handheld, I asked the Army Mars table if I could join.

I was told no and that I needed a HF rig.

So what's the "Mars Mod" for VHF/UHF rigs?

If it is still like it used to be, you have to meet your minimum operating time on one of the HF nets. Then you can do additional participation on a VHF net. So, to join you must have HF capability.

Gerald, the core competency of the MARS programs is to provide contingency HF communications support to the Department of Defense and the Services.  That is why we require all MARS members to demonstrate proficiency in HF communications and have access to HF gear.  VHF, when used, is primarily for coordinating HF support in a local area where there are a large pool of MARS operators.

Thanks!

I was curious because, on a scale of 1 to 10, HF operations at my QTH are about 0.01.
