Join SKCC or Not?
« on: April 04, 2018, 06:42:53 AM »

CW has always been my first love.  I have been doing it for 48 years since I was a novice.  I have worked hard to perfect my sending on my Bencher Paddles and I use the electronic keyer in my radios.

I really have no interest in going back to a straight key.

Does this mean there is no reason for me to join SKCC?  I can't see one.  I can't participate in their monthly straight key night or other events.

It's seems a shame, because I am all for the promotion of CW that's possible.  I guess I'll join, but won't be active, which is seems sort of like not joining at all.

Anyone else feel this way?  Or am I missing something?

I joined SKCC some 10 years ago and participated in their on-air activities for a while, but eventually lost interest. I am now using an electronic keyer for all QSOs but once in a while a SKCC member calls me and asks if I can switch to a straight key, so the contact counts to their awards. Fortunately I can then just switch my key to cootie-mode and fulfill their request. Some members might be disappointed if you can't...

Bugs are OK with SKCC. And sideswipers or cooties. I'm a member and I use a bug.

When an Italian was asked to comment on the Pope's position on birth control, he replied: "He no playa da game, he no makea da rules!"

What are SKCC rules and regs?

What are SKCC rules and regs?

As with the Pope these days, SKCC principles are matters of honor, not of law.

There are other groups...

Take FISTS ( http://www.fists.org/ ) and CWOPS ( http://www.cwops.org/ ) for example.

I'm a SKCC member, and I use a U.S. Navy (WWII) vintage "Flame Proof" straight key
that I acquired in 1959 for my Novice setup. note: SKCC membership is free and the
other CW clubs have membership fees.

SKCC is all about MECHANICALLY generated CW. I'm a member and I enjoy collecting member numbers and I like several of the operating events. But there is no reason to join if you don't want to participate according to Hoyle. If you use electronic keyers, then FISTS or CWOps may be a better fit for you.

I'm also a member of the NAQCC club which has free memberships
and frequent CW contests, but it is QRP only just so you know.

EE: Very true.  So if the rules say, "hand keys only" shouldn't that be the only way to go?  How about QRP?  Save thing applies.

If we "interpret" rules the way we want, what's the point in joining?

If I joint the QLF Club and insist  on sending with my right foot, why did I join?  Duh....ya see what I mean?

I remember when Tom first started the SKCC back in 2006 and talking to him on the phone he said he was gobsmacked by how many people wanted to join.  Now I think they have more than 18000 members.  Anyone who is interested in this organization likes the idea of using a straight key vs a paddle or keyboard ETC...   If that is not your idea of fun on CW SKCC is probably not for you.  Yes you can get your number and fake it on the air using a keyboard or paddle but that's not what this is about.  It started with Tom's idea after SKN in 2006.  I guess what I'm saying is these people don't try to fake it they actually like the challenge and so do I.  I would encourage you to join.  Great folks.

There are plenty of Morse-related groups (clubs, organisations, whatever) out there. If you want to join in then it's probably best to pick ones that match your interests. There's not much point in joining something if you're not going to participate in the activities they organise...

I would agree with that 100 percent.  That's why it's called the STRAIGHT Key Century Club.
