900 MHz FM Repeaters in North Carolina
« on: July 02, 2018, 10:37:09 AM »

Hi Everyone,

I know there's not too many 900 MHz repeaters in North Carolina.  I believe there's only 6 active, 4 of them are FM including mine.  I have just recently setup (2) 900 MHz repeaters in the south central portion of the state.  I have also setup a handful of guys with Motorola GTX 900 MHz radios to work my repeaters and the others in the state.  Here's what I know of:

927.025 / 902.025 - PL 107.2 hz - N1RIK - Laurinburg (linked to 145.27 and 444.7 in Pinehurst)

927.0375 / 902.0375 - PL 94.8 hz - KC4IRA - Crowders Mtn / Gastonia

927.1375 / 902.1375 - PL 131.8 hz - N1RIK - McCain (near SW Corner of Ft. Bragg) - Wide Coverage (up to 50 mile footprint mobile) - Covers from Dillon SC to near Dunn NC on I-95, including HT coverage into Fayetteville.

927.6125 - 902.6125 - PL 118.8 hz - K4KAY - Charlotte

Does anyone know of any other active FM repeaters in the state?  Is there anyone on here a 900 MHz user?  If so, my repeaters are now active, however not many hams know they are on the air.

A note... I did program the McCain NC repeater so that hams with 900 MHz radios from New England could use it.  It's the same frequency as the Waltham, MA 900 MHz repeater... PL decode of 131. hz ... And it also encodes the 100 hz PL on the transmitter as the Waltham machine does, just incase some one has their radio programmed to their decode tone on their receiver.

We have a big group in S FL that uses P25 on 900.  It sounds so much better than the hissing and popping on analog FM or the muddy Hearclear filter.  One of my friends set up a couple 900 Quantars.  Everyone is running around with the EF Johnson handy scratchies.  They take the same batteries and speaker-mics as the XTS line.  I snagged an XTL2500 on eBay for $350 that I put in the truck.  I use it several times a day, much more than the VHF or UHF radios.  Works from Miami Gardens to Lake Worth.

That's good to hear you have a great following down there.  Is there a lot of hams on 900 throughout the state?  I dont have any p25 gear myself.  I first gave out some gtx mobiles...then some other local hams decided to buy some.  I'm not sure if I vested the extra cost into p25 that hams would follow... but who knows what the future willbring.  So far all 7 repeaters I have setup right now are analog.

I started with a GTX mobile.  Then one of my friends showed up at the house with a box full of Spectras.  I had to do some mods and repairs to get them to work (resistor on the VCO steering voltage line and rotten capacitor replacement).  We used those for years, then he lost his repeater site.  A few years later, another friend got the P25 Quantar up and we started up on 900 again.  As far as I know, we're the only really active group on 900 in the area.
