Still TalkGroup on a repeater confused
« on: July 08, 2018, 03:40:30 PM »

My local repeater has around 34 Talkgroups (TGs) defined.  Most of these are dynamic i.e. PTT.  There are only a couple that I'm interested in using.  So what about the other PTT TGs?  If my understanding is correct, (a rarity), I won't hear someone using the repeater on one of those TGs that I don't have in my code plug.  So how do I know the repeater is in use?  (I do have color code specified so I think that causes the transmission to fail, but couldn't it also fail because I'm out of range?

I don't recall what radio you said you're using but on models like my TYT MD-380 with current modified firmware, there is a feature called "promiscuous" which is basically a "receive all talkgroups" mode.  Doesn't matter what talk group is flapping, you'll hear it.  From there you can note the talk group and enter a manual talk group session for it to transmit, or add it to your mode list for permanent groups on that repeater.

Mark, I have the Ailunce HD1.  For each TG you specify whether you want promiscuous or not.  I've set it for the TG's that I defined on the repeater.  It would be nice if you just defined it for the repeater, which may be the way your MD-380 is.

When people are talking it shows the TG number in a pop-up.  Of course that is kind of meaningless to me since as I scroll through TG's with the top knob, it shows the Alias.  Also, when people are quick on the PTT the pop-up never goes away so if I did try to join in, I'd more than likely be talking on the wrong TG.

The way it should work would be if you are listening to a talkgroup, and you push the PTT it should switch transmit to that talkgroup.  Perhaps it does, I don't know.  I wish I had another DMR HT to test with.  (Birthday is coming up. :) )

The result of afternoon's testing.  I had the radio on 9998 and people were talking on 3166.  I tried to break-in, but they were not using any delays between PTT's.  What the HD1 did was to display "Channel Busy".  It then got rid of the pop-up, and allowed me to change TG's.  So it appears if someone is using the repeater on a TG that I haven't coded for in the code plug, it will just tell me that the channel is busy.
