10 meter operating suggestions for NE US?
« on: July 12, 2018, 10:46:29 AM »

Recently moved to a condo. Can only get a 10 meter stealth horizontal dipole up. USING A PRESIDENT LINCOLN II +. Any suggestions as to times, days, or frequencies in the Northeast (NJ, PA, NY, CT) where I might find activity this summer?

10 meters has been opening up quite a bit lately!  Keep an eye on DX maps for activity.  www.DXmaps.com

The vast majority of 10 meter and 6 meter operation this summer will be on the FT8 frequencies.   28.074 and 50.313
Even when the band appears to be "dead" there will be activity on these frequencies.  When the sunspots return hopefully in a few years. then the CW and SSB portions of the bands will be much more active. In the meantime, FT8 it is.

I would suggest you try 12 meters. Lower MUF (it will work when 10 will not) and because of small band allocation it is much easier to watch for openings.

Everything you say is true, BUT there are at least 10 times the people monitoring and working 10 meters vs. working 12 meters.  I am still needing Alaska on 12 meters long after working WAS on 8 other bands including 10 meters.

Well even if there is 5 or 10 times as many there is 25x as much space on 10m so you are a lot more likely to run into one of the few operators in 12m's narrow spectrum. Even 15m meter with a little longer dipole is MUCH better that 10m in cycle lows.

Run into?  As in tune around and listen for them?  Not happening in my world.  I can see the whole band and can instantly see activity.  Or if working FT8, just stay at the "watering hole", cause all the creatures gotta come there to drink.

I haven't operated a blind radio for several years now and don't intend to. As least as a shack radio.  I do have an FT891 and it is a Steve Wonder radio, except for a "snapshot" of the band activity.  I use it for portable operations.  Once you have owned a radio where you can "see" the activity you will not go back. Operating blind is like looking thru a very narrow slit in a fence.  You can't see much. I can remember operating blind radios, but it sucked even then, and it really really sucks now that panadaptor radios with waterfalls are so cheap and available.

The RBN is always a good place to check plus the various home beacons around the US and world.

If you cant copy CW the CB band is always a good indicator of US skip conditions and is a lot closer than 12M.

The Lincoln 2+ has 12 metres in it.
I now find that 28.074 is a better indicator than CB nowadays but that is this side of the pond.

10m is surprisingly open when operation off bicycle from open areas. For stealth home, try a cage dipole (10-12m easily) or even a LA6PB split dipole. Loop antenna also effervescent and small (horizontal, vertical, wire or aluminum). Or my fav, an EFHW. Google AA5TB for further tips on EFHWs. No tuners or matchers necessary for this band. It's a short wavelength and oh so easy to use full size antennas. Have fun, have fun, have fun :)

Mildly envious of your toys!

Listen for CB activity to let you know bands are open, then also 10 meter beacons. I would then randomly make calls on 28.400 USB. at around Noon and again at around 4Pm local time.

Good luck!

Good advice!  I leave an 11 meter radio on and squelched in the shack.

There's a fairly active group in NEOH on 28.337. A mix of ages, including some retirees. If the band is up you're likely to work one or more of us.
