"The Same Sky" - Cold War spy tale on Netflix
« on: July 12, 2018, 05:33:02 PM »

A 6-part German TV drama currently on Netflix tells a fictionalized story of a "Romeo mission" against the US Devil's Mountain listening post in Berlin during the early 1970's. The series is quite interesting though, admittedly, the radio aspect is minimal - but real Morse is in there and a short depiction of a spy receiving his instructions via a numbers station. I can't ID any of the radios used - maybe someone here can.

I made a short YouTube clip of the numbers station scene:

fun-ef , neu-gen & etc. , is quite accurate, not found in any tourist dictionary.

Will have to go watch again, but I did notice them...they were standard issue 1970s rigs as I recall.  Interesting.  Mahalo. 73, Bill  AH6FC

Hi there.
A receiver, below the tape recorder, seems to be a Geloso G4/214

Radio spotting is a very popular sub hobby for anal retentive hams. You're watching a movie or TV show and the characters are using radios. You know you've got it bad when  one of the characters picks up a microphone and you pray that the camera gets a close up of the radio.  When it doesn't happen you curse at the TV for being cheated of your pleasure.

The receiver on the desk to the right bears an uncanny resemblance to a 70's SW portable but I can't put a brand to it, thought possibly a Braun but its not a T-1000.
I trust they don't advertise any of this gear as from a non smoking shack!
Note the yellow stains on the wall and the smell the Nicotine odour?
Glamorous life being a spy!

Shucks, the link is gone.  Sounds like a good series, though; will try to find.

YouTube sent me an email - something about copyright infringement or something. So I deleted the video rather than get sent to Devil's Island with McQueen & Hoffman.

Ha,  what marketing geniuses!!!  Your link and reference to the show probably doubled the number of viewers it had.

Thanks for the heads up, John. I recommend "Bordertown."  It's Finnish, and it is not one of those series where you can pick up occasional snippets of Anglo-American speak like some of the other international series.

I hate when we realize it's a receiver only and the mic is plugged into the headphone jack! Can't remember the names but seen that several times over the years:(.

Not to get too far off the subject, but not too long ago I noticed this exact situation in one of my favorite movies, the original 1978 Dawn of the Dead. At one point one of the leads is listening to a biker gang, presumably on CB radio (this WAS 1978!) but the base station rig the leads had is actually a receiver I recognized even from the back -- a Realistic DX160 with the matching external speaker, along with a Realistic desk mic. I had to laugh when I realized, after seeing the film so many times over the years, that it took me that long to notice it wasn't a transceiver. But you're right, it happens in so many movies/TV shows.
