Community responders represent a number of professions: law enforcement; emergency medical services; firefighters; and other community emergency personnel. The U.S. only has approximately 800,000 law enforcement officials, 1.1 million firefighters and 210,000 EMTs/paramedics. That’s 2.1 million first responders supporting more than 300 million neighbors.
In Minnesota, we have 12,405 EMS personnel registered as first responders; 9500 are basic EMTs and almost 2300 are certified paramedics. In the most recent 12-month period for which statistics are available, there were more than 400,00 requests for emergency medical services.
We have 12,300 licensed peace officers, 10,576 of whom are active.
We have 3810 licensed firefighters, 2300 of whom are full-time career and 2037 of whom are part time volunteers. In all, there are 20,000 firefighters in Minnesota, more than 90% of whom are volunteers.
