Raspberry Pi 3B+ Failures
« on: August 06, 2018, 05:15:35 PM »

Bought one and it was DOA...will not boot. If you go to the Adafruit (seller) website and look at their forum you may notice that there are an extraordinary number of postings regarding failures. They have acknowledged the problem and are replacing dead ones. The root problem apparently is power/voltage regulator devices on the PC board failing. Have other hams experienced these failures?

The products are manufactured in 2 locations, the UK and in CHINA. Does anyone have any info regarding failures related to a particular manufacture location?

Do the previous Raspberry Pi 3B (not the + model) boards have reliability problems also? I want to use a SBC for digi modes but want a reliable setup. Any suggestions of other manufacturers, etc. ?

I had one do this once and took it back to the store for a replacement (I buy mine at the local Fry's).  Easy.

The only other hardware issue I have had is that apparently, there is a glitch that causes the SSD to go bad on some write cycle or other.  Once this happens, you basically are toast for that SSD and you have to start over with a new one.

That was supposed to have been fixed, but I still get that one about once a year, though not yet on my B+ Pis.

I have increasingly put the critical data on some sort of USB-based storage to combat this.

Except for that, I have had no hardware issues.

Another issue with the Raspberry Pi is that it is rapidly falling behind the competition with regards to speed, memory, features and performance. It is becoming a bit dated.  Rpi has 1 GB of memory, while in competing boards 2 GB and up is commonplace. The RPi continues to be hamstrung by a hardware bottleneck where USB and Ethernet ports share a single chip; it does not offer full Gigabit ethernet.

Other boards that offer more performance and memory than the Pi include

Rock64
Odroid C2
Friendly NanoPi K1+

The NanoPi K1+ is most intriguing to me as an RPi replacement because not only is it more powerful than a Pi, the software support looks impressive on their Wiki page (http://wiki.friendlyarm.com/wiki/index.php/NanoPi_K1_Plus).  Their custom 4.14 kernel packs in a lot of goodies to play with.

The downside to the RPi replacements is you don't have nearly as much community support.  I'd only recommend experimenting with these boards to those who are comfortable with and have had some experience configuring Linux machines.
