"73" not needed for a contact in FT8.
« on: August 22, 2018, 07:57:48 AM »

Yesterday I got my Sept issue of QST...and glancing thru it I happened upon "The World Above 50MHZ"
with a subline "Making a Valid Contact".  Joe Taylor, K1JT, brings up some points in the second para-
graph...but one sentence stood out among all the rest..."Thus, sending or receiving a "73" message
is not required for a complete, valid contact in FT8 or other modes."

Agreed, but some people think it is or they won't even log it.  I guess it explains why some people didn't upload to LOTW for me. :(

There is no 73 sent after working a DXpedition, most special event stations or for contest QSOs. Sending 73 is certainly a tradition for "normal" ragchewing QSOs but FT8 certainly is not a normal ragchewing mode! Though, I guess a QSO mode is coming out...

Kraus I thought you were always "back to the paddle"... Did you turn to "the darkside"?

K0UA,

Oh no. I took the original post wrong. FT-8 is just so condensed, why clutter it.

And no I will not go the dark side Darth.

I spent fall and winter paddling on 1.815MHz. Darned if my brain ain't stupid. It's stuck at maybe 10WPM.
I just couldn't copy well enough or fast enough. I never got to the point of just writing the call sign and name
on paper. I had to write everything. I had to do that when I first started thirty years ago and as I got faster,
I wrote less. But now, even a dit is a...a...ah an 'E'. It just never came.

Oh well. Say hey to the family.
