I've had some strange results with SD cards.
A few have had some "ghost" partitions that contain the "this is a bad sector" maps. Or so I infer from later activity. These are small and ill explained. Most SD cards hide this map or do without it, but a few do this strange partition trick.
If you blast on an image on such a card, you may destroy this strange little partition one way or another and many strange results ensue.
You could actually install Raspbian, but end up with poor performance and/or random errors.
