I counted 205 coming available that date.  I've already got 25 picked out and ready to apply for.

Why 25?

Because you can only submit one vanity application per day, and the application only has space for 25 different callsigns.

And that is to get just ONE call?

Since this call was a standard sequential issue Ive never paid attention to this vanity stuff.

Vanity call assignments (for the highly-desired calls, like 1x2s) can be very competitive.  FCC allows what they call "request by list." When your application is processed, they work through your list in order and assign the first call that is available. That's useful when multiple calls are available on the same date, so the applicant can express preferences. Even with that process, though, many applicants have had a number of applications rejected because none of the calls on the list were available.

Since this call was a standard sequential issue Ive never paid attention to this vanity stuff.

You've missed a lot of fun, controversy, rules changes, frustrations, etc.

Not trying to be a downer here but I thought if you had a vanity call it was kinda looked down upon.  Like look at you with your "vanity" call I have had my call since 1966 etc...  Good on you guys though I have nothing against it at all.  Good luck and thanks to the OP for the info I did not know about this.

No one looks down on someone who has one vanity call. What riles people up are the folks that either create fake clubs to take control of multiple callsigns, or who churn through multiple vanities relatively rapidly, keeping those multiple calls out of circulation (due to the two-year waiting period).

It's a bit unfortunate that FCC used the word "vanity" to describe them, due to the connotation of the word vanity, but I guess there was precedent with states issuing vanity license plates.

Well I have just heard people make mention in a negative way about someones "vanity" call  like they did not earn it in some way.  It's not unfortunate that the FCC used the word vanity it's all of the hams that make fun of people who have a vanity call.  I'm all for it and good on you for posting thank you.

I have mixed feelings about vanity calls. Had a 2x1 a few years back, kept getting emails and QSL requests as if I were the former holder. Now I’m back to my original call. While it’s tempting (I check the AE7Q site often) I tell myself it’s just a call like any other call, nothing special about it since any extra can apply.

There was a vanity period for a short time in the 70s as well.

Yes, there was a short period in the late 70s where Extras could apply for specific 1x2 callsigns. There was no opportunity for non-Extras to apply for a preferred callsign, and I don't think Extras could apply for anything but the 1x2s. But the FCC never referred to that program as a "vanity" program, and those licensees who still hold those calls are not listed as HV calls like all of the post-1995 vanity applicants--they are HA callsigns just like the sequential issues.

All true.

The specific-call program was short-lived, though.

My call was sequentially issued in late 1977 when I moved to New York State. When I moved back to PA in 1979, I kept it, because FCC had announced that they would not reissue calls such as N2EY if they were given up (!). So if I'd gotten a 3 land 1x2, someone else would not.

Now it's almost 40 years later.....

----

If one looks through old Callbooks of the era, the 1x2s have a rather odd pattern to them, at least in the 2nd call district. One would think that they would have started with N2AA and just gone down the alphabet, but a look through the listings shows big gaps in the sequence. Eventually they went back and filled them in.

You could apply for any call sign. My friend who had let his license expire and later re-licensed was able to get his original WA1 2x3 call sign back.

The current sequential call sign system was in effect in 1979. If you had asked for a 3-land call when you moved, you would have received a 2x1 starting with A (the 1980 call book ends with AJ3P).

Yes....but....FCC would not have reissued N2EY back then. (The rules later changed). So by keeping N2EY, one more Extra got a short call.
