Can anyone help with info on Fusion mode repeaters please?
« on: November 27, 2018, 03:52:43 AM »

I'm thinking of buying a VHF/UHF rig - sold my last one about a year ago to help fund an upgrade of the HF station. I'm wondering if I should buy something with Yaesu Fusion capability, but I'm having a lot of difficulty getting information on just what you can do with it.

I have used ICOM DStar in the past - still have a DStar handy somewhere.  I'm not particularly interested in digital voice for its own sake - the thing which is attractive about DStar is the ability to internet link repeaters and hop across continents. The internet linking on DStar works - but it is a real pain to set up. I'm also a bit short of DStar repeaters in the areas where I'm usually active.

I've seen that Yaesu have the option of internet linking repeaters via the "Wires" protocol, but I can find virtually no documentation on how it works and what is possible with it. If I have a Fusion compatible radio and call into a local Fusion compatible repeater, am I able to control the connection to other repeates and set up routes in much the same way that I can through a DStar repeater? If not, then I'll save some money and just buy a standard VHF radio!

If I have a Fusion compatible radio and call into a local Fusion compatible repeater,

Check first to see if you even have a YSF repeater within range.  Odds are you don't.

Thanks to both of you for those contributions! The answer seems to be in a description of Wires-X which is referenced from the description of Fusion that was suggested above by NA4IT.

I think both of you guys are in the US, aren't you? Fusion repeaters have been quite popular on this side of the pond and I should not have too much difficulty finding one within range from many parts of the country.

I'm going to save my Christmas pennies and go have a look at rigs in the new year!

Yep, I'm here in the southwest US.  I live in the most populous city in my state and there are -zero- YSF repeaters here and only 3 listed in the entire state (which may be paper repeaters for all I know).  From my QTH I can hit 2 or 3 DStar and 3 or 4 DMR machines (and probably 3-4 dozen FM).  I have yet to encounter anyone in my travels that has ever used YSF or could relate how it is better/different than other modes.  I have both DStar and DMR radios and within the last year replaced my 440 FM repeater with brandmeister DMR one, and play with that a bit.  Not overly impressed but at least with DMR the cost of admission isn't prohibitive.  As time goes on I think we'll see systems bridged together more and then it won't matter as much who's hardware you use to access whatever nodes/talkgroups/reflectors you're interested in.

YAESU put out a series of 3 Youtube videos explaining System Fusion and WIRES. You do a search on Youtube. They are very comprehensive.
