Yaesu FT-70DR or FT-2DR for C4FM / Fusion? Which one?
« on: October 16, 2020, 05:45:53 AM »

I want to play around with C4FM on my hotspot, and am considering one of these two radios.  The 3DR has abysmal ratings on this board, so I'm passing on that.

Any input on which one of these two would be preferable?

Thanks

I own both the FT-70DR and the FTM-7250 and I am very happy with both of them. The FT-70DR has very good audio. I use both on a local C4FM repeater, so can't comment on a hotspot, but don't see why it would be any different. I can also monitor the local airport on both which is a bonus.

I have owned an FT-70DR and currently own an FT-2D. The FT-2D display is much larger and shows so much more. However, with you only wanting to use via a hotspot, the FT-70DR will be sufficient. The additional stuff (room, news, etc.) that a Wires-X repeater offers does not come through on the hotspot I use (Openspot2).

Absolutely cannot go wrong with the FT70D. I have used one for quite a long time and it is a solid radio. As mentioned the receive and transmit audio for that matter, is very good. If you are not interested in GPS or APRS, the 70 is all you need. The FT2d has both but actually I doubt many hams use these features. The FT2d has more information on the screen and if you access Wires you can scroll thru a list of rooms. In contrast the 70DR will not, but it has a screen where you enter the room number and with one button you can access the room. It doe# have up to 5 memories or just type in the room number. It’s fun to think there are hundreds of rooms to access but if you are like most Hams you will probably monitor 3 or 4 rooms most of the time. I want to listen to a nice sounding radio. From most of the information I have gathered between the two, the 70 probably has a little nicer audio but maybe not by much. By the way, both will cross code with your hotspot and work well. I wouldn’t put much stock in the comments on battery performance. I haven’t experienced that and just let it set in the cradle charger when not in use and it probably won’t be a problem.
Good luck!

Thanks.  I'll give a 70 a shot.

I was in the same boat as you and after a lot of research ordered a FT-70DR this past weekend from Universal Radio. They seem to have the best price ($170); https://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/ht/6070.html

There is a FT-70DR Facebook group that is very active and you may want to join it; https://www.facebook.com/groups/709510049219848
