I continued using CW even after upgrading from Novice many years ago because, as a young kid living at home, I could don the headphones and get on the air late at night when everyone else was asleep and have no risk of waking them.

Later I realized that every "syllable" sent on CW is at 100% full power of the rig in use - not so with SSB, where speech patters dictate the amount of power from the rig for each syllable. On CW, even the briefest letter E is sent with 100% of the power applied.

I like CW because for me it's meditative, can operate QRP power levels when portable and it's like speaking a foreign language. Good for the brain too.

Why?

Because the No code tech whiners didn't take it, won't take it, can't learn it.  It sets the bar a bit higher.  Sure, crappy ops exist everywhere. But I like having a hook to the past.

Not sure why I like code - it's just sorta like breathing - it just is. But, I do know when / where/ what / why - the "how" of I came to love CW.

MGY. Callsign of the Titanic.

I was a kid in third grade and I ordered two books from the "Weekly Reader" program in our school. One book was "Electricity and Magnetism" the other was a "Night to Remember" about the sinking of the Titanic. The radio ops, the Morse code ops on the Titanic, were heroes and I was hooked. I was going to become a radio op. I did.

Why do you like CW?
I like CW because it has a good beat to it and the guitars have a really nice sound.

Made me chuckle.  A few years back I was at a bluegrass jam with a large crowd of players who drifted in and out from one group to the next.  As we were jammin' out a fella walks up with an alto sax.  Hoo boy, there were some eyes rolling in that circle.  Sax in bluegrass?  Well that guy showed us!  He managed to fit in so well I think some of us thought "I gotta get me a sax player!" ...  ;)

For several years the wife and I went to a couple of blue-grass sessions held weekly. The sax isn't only for blues, it seems to be able to fit in with almost all music. If I remember correctly, there was a country group in the 60's with a sax, but I could be wrong.
The sweetest sounds come out of a nice mellow sax! Buddy Rich and Jean Krupa(sp?) might argue the point, but what do they know  about music? LOL

The saxophone as a musical instrument should be banned. We would lose two songs (Pink Floyd - Us and Them, Tina Turner - We Don't Need Another Hero) where it can be heard without psychological harm, but the benefits would greatly outweigh.

Back to the topic:
What I love about the CW is that it's an excellent environment for studying the human species, because I don't know any other human activity where there's such a concentration of sociopaths (deliberate tuning, CQing with pirated call, sending long series of EEEEEEs at 50wpm, all on a DX calling frequency).

[For the sake of a language barrier, I add that the entire post was intended as a joke... though not that much. :-)]

Great sax at 1:55 in this 40 yo tune by Mick and the boys:

I'm just waiting on CQWW-CW to start...

I completed the CW academy advanced class last week and have since been nominated and sponsored into CWops, #3041.
I had to brag just a little.
Congrats, K4EMF! Nice call sign, BTW.

I hope that my friend Roy, WA4DOU (who started this thread a few years ago), is ok. Haven't heard Roy on the air, or heard from him since before the start of the pandemic. My last email to him bounced back.

It can't be fundamental if it is no longer a basic requirement or any requirement for that matter.
Historical YES; Fundamental NO.

Play nice, John! I'm hoping that the one that suggested dropping CW from being a requirement for all tests comes to his senses and gets back on his/her meds and changes his/her mind.  :o ::) ;D
