Mars is using a software sound-card mode for digital comm.  The encryption is performed by the software.

I'm sure you are probably right, I just wanted to bring up the point that the MARS members are not required to have special radios or other hardware.

Guys, I really enjoyed the banter and the point is, I guess, if you don't like MARS don't do MARS.

This hasn't been about like/dislike of MARS.   I really goofed if that's the way it turned out.  MARS has a place and a purpose.  And, in its choice of use of digital modes that can be employed with a sound card, it has enabled virtually all amateurs with HF SSB capability and a computer to participate as members.

When the chips are down, that is very important and entirely unlike ARRL posture, which sought only PacTor equipped amateurs for emergency assignments.
